Saw a review of a Creative Zen 8Gb Flash Drive MP3 player yesterday. It had lots of positives, but a final point as a negative that they touched on was that they said they would like to see a hard-drive version instead of flash. What does this mean? I have an iPod Nano (4Gb) and I think that will be hard-drive, is it not?
So what about the Zen at 8Gb. I know it takes SD cards, thus making it a flash drive, but if you don't have a card in it does that mean it IS a hard drive afterall? I couldn't understand the reviewer saying that. I hope one of you techies can shed some light on this please. I also hope I have explained this correctly.

My Creative is a hard drive, from what you say that one isn't it uses flash technology instead....ie an SD card rather than a hard drive.
Cheers for the reply mate. But it does say the SD card slot can be used as EXTRA storage, ie not the main 8Gb it is on about. SO liek I say, if you aren't using the SD slot, then you are surely running from the internal 8Gb. Am I just being daft here?
Not sure, but I'm assuming there is also inbuilt flash card storage then if it says it isn't a hard drive. The cards can be better for people using whilst jogging, in the gym etc....although I've not had any problems with mine in the gym
It means that the data is stored on something similar to a sd card internally where as a hard drive one writes to disc just like saving something on on your computer and is a lot more stable.
is a creative zen better than an i pod though thinking of getting a player and not sure which, reviews of creative zen on amazon seem very positive for what i want ie really just to play music, i assume i could transfer my cd's to either
I really do like my iPod nano mate, but to be honest, I would have a proper look at reviews etc before making a decision. Mainly with the iPod you are paying for the name, and to a lesser extent, the style. I really do like the look of the Creative Zen 8Gb though. Apparently the sound quality is very good on it too. Being completely honest though, the best sound that I have heard was from my Sony Ericsson w810i mobile. The sound was second to none - it was only the memory that let it down - even though I had a 1Gb card in it I needed more like 4Gb like I have now. May fancy going up to 8Gb in the near future though.
lol. The things we look back on! Remember having to sit through 90 minutes of recording onto cassette, stopping / pausing the tape in between songs to compile a new tape. Drag and drop on a pc is so much quicker.
Erm I don't think the Hard Disk is more stable, in fact I think it is the opposite - the key thing is that they offer a larger capacity. The larger capacity iPods (classic etc) use hard disks the Nano's and Touch's use solid state memory.
Do you get... ...a decent warranty on the hard drive models? The moving parts surely mean they are more fragile. The other bonus of the solid state ones is of course are they are much lighter.
Just relying the information i was told in dixons when i was looking for an mp3 player last year so sorry if it is wrong.
