For those of you who are interested there is a very good article in the daily Mail about bringing MP's to justice over the expenses scandal; the link to it is http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...lps-launch-campaign-prosecute-sleaze-MPs.html
So claiming for a mortgage that had been paid off can just be ignored ? This goes beyond the colour of your politics.
Had you or I made a similar claim then we'd be in the ****. This shower just shrug it off.

my 2ps worth When MPs are paid considerably less that an average Professor in Aberystwyth, I think we get the MPs we deserve! MPs are in charge of the country and have to have an expensive second home in London and loads of travel. Our Profs are in charge of a few second division academics and have one cheap house. MP salaries are relatively low by professional standards, because the public are not happy with them being paid more. Their genuine expensive (not the crap they are in the news for) are extensive. So let’s stop paying them expenses and pay them a decent salary. We will not sae the country any money. But it has to be farer.
Their salaries debate Still doesn't justify fraudulent claims.
How many MP's are bright enough to be University professors ? You can cross reference any number of jobs to debate comparative salaries etc. One could argue that with the gradual movement of decision making to the European Parliament that our MP's have less 'real' work to do, and their responsibilities are reducing and so don't deserve paying any more than they currently get.

RE: Their salaries debate Take your point. But - have you met any professors lately they are 10 a penny and not all that smart. Plus they also put in claims for everything. Found one claiming for a kitkat recenty. For F***s sake it cost more to process the claim than its worth. If you have system to claim, people will always claim what they can get away with.
I know... In any case I can't see how any kind of prosecution can be brought. Have they broken any laws/rules? That is not excusing it, by any stretch of the imagination. Just because its not legally wrong does not make it morally right. I'd sack the lot and start again. Well apart from Denis Skinner.
RE: Their salaries debate There's 'the system' and then there's the type of person that claims for a kit kat - or their moat cleaning, or their husbands porno film.
I don't think taking the piss is a trait unique to MP's - what I think causes the most outrage is that MP's, especially cabinet members are the ones formulating tax policy - cgt, stamp duty etc, and seem concerned with closing tax loopholes, and then go ouit of their way to avoid those taxes that they wish the rest of us to pay.

It's the 'fraudulent' bit that gets me... ...most of the claims whilst morally bankrupt are within the rules therefore can't be fraud. The claim for mortgage payments is likely to be dismissed as negligence rather than fraud.
Now if you were to submit a tax return that contained an entry for tax relief on interest on a rental property which was incorrect then you'd be seen by the revenue to be negligent and you'd have to repay the tax & interest and as from April this year you'd be likely to cop a minimum penalty of 15% (could be as high as 100%)
it's a reight bag o ballacks but it also diminishes the credibility of the major parties just before elections and I wonder if it may just tip Joe Public towards the BNP or others.

RE: I know... I'm no barrister, but I think it's a fair bet to say that Elliot Morley has pinched money.
RE: It's the 'fraudulent' bit that gets me... That's the worry isn't it ? Stuff like this just adds more fuel to extremists.
We'll get round to trying to blame the media, but our elected reps have brought all this upon themselves.

RE: What was his particular one? nt Paid his mortgage off, then kept claiming for it. Apparently failed to provide documentation when asked, then tried to claim on another residence instead if I've understood it correctly.
Dress that up however you want, but imho it's theft.

I agree.. they have brough this on themselves, but the public gets what the public deserves. Not many people take an active interest in what is happening anymore and therefore we get this **** and worse. The media is as culpable for that as the next man. As is our pathetic "democratic" system of government...
It is... and he should be prosecuted. But by the police not be the fecking Daily Mail. They'll want Oswald Moseley in.
RE: I agree.. I don't think a lack of public engagement in the political process excuses nicking money.
If this does actually kick folk into taking note of what their MP does - then all the better for it.

You're an angry and bitter person.
Angry and bitter. I'm not wound up about it though because I'd get wound up and obsessed.
Angry, bitter and obsessed.
And obsessed, probably.
