Just watching Channel 5 about how they make the cakes. Didn't realise it was in Carlton. I could kill a French Fancy.
Worst holiday job I ever had. I hate marzipan. They knew that. So they had me climbing into, and cleaning out marzipan waste from the biggest marzipan containers you've ever seen. Thanks for the memory jog. Marzipan nightmares guaranteed tonight!
When the rats run across the high pipes and misplace their footing, falling into the mixing vats, they dont stop the machines. Never ate anything from their since the mid 80s when me mam worked there.
You have my deepest sympathys that stuff is the devil's spawn, I think that would have been me jacking evil barstewards.
Going against the grain, but I love marzipan! I try not to think too hard about food production, otherwise I'd never eat anything ever again!
When I worked at YW. One of the pumping stations i covered (Shaw lane) was the one where waste from Lyons went. The stink in the well was awful at times. And stuff caused issues with the operation of the station. For Helen lol. Didn't stop me eating their products like. Even those with Marzipan
I'm not sure if it is or isn't. But more than possible I'd guess. especially that far back. VATs were largely uncovered and only the vast improvements in health and safety in most food production would prevent such mishaps. How many products get recalled due to contamination even today.
I've worked there 30 odd years mate, trust me nowt knowingly has been sent out with a dirty gret rat in it ..........sithi.
Worked there for a couple of months on static ovens, loading and emptying them with Christmas cakes, think they send a lot to Australia.
Not pouring scorn MT. Knowingly I get mate. Unknowingly ?. Just pointing out it's not beyond the realms of possibility if Vats. silo's or storage tanks are not covered properly. I've worked on all 3, Admittedly not food products. Most of the storage tanks had mixing tanks prior. Blades spinning at thousands of revs a minute. Not sure a rat would still be intact lol.
Mixers have always had lids on 'em because if they didn't the mix batter would fly all over the shop. The bulk silos are enclosed with hinged hatches above to allow stock measurements to be taken. The only incident I can recall and this is before I started so this is second hand is when a panicked spuggy got in the factory and knocked itself out and went through one of the ovens, I don't think it ended up on a shelf in Tesco's mindsthi. We once had a rogue squirrel knocking abart for about 6 months no matter what they did they couldn't catch the crafty f@(ker .........sithi.
Same reason why I never send anything back in a restaurant. If it's cold, crap or whatever, I'll just leave it and ask for the bill.
