No denying it was a good comeback last night, but yet again we failed to capitalise on a winning opportunity, as the game presented itself. If we replicated the points tally for the last three games over the remainder of the season we would hit 52 points, which would not guarantee survival. If Flicker said "we can't carry on like this" in close season, why are we still carrying on like this? It seems our only game (or season) plan is to dig ourselves into a hole and then have to bust a gut getting out of it. That's not sustainable. We need a defence. We need someone to explain that games last for 90 minutes. We need a striker with pace. And we need a midfield that actually links the other two areas. Standing still is going backwards.
We need to attack from the first minute and try to score first rather than sitting back and trying to contain opposition in the first half at away matches , we looked a different team second half once we had to go for a goal
Scoringfirst has been no guarentee this season. As for what we need its a team of playersthst work as a TEAM that means each one of a unit supporting each other and each unit supporting the other units
We certainly look a lot better when we play an attacking game with two strikers playing direct down midle
Bad Maths alert! 5 points from 3 games = 1.67ppg remaining games = 32 so points we would gain = 1.67*32 = 53.33 But we already have 10 points from the first 14 games so projected total = 63 points and certain safety We just need to play like we did 2nd half last night for the rest of the season and we will be fine
Re: Bad Maths alert! there's no doubt, our start has been nothing short of a nightmare, giving the momentum pre-season. but we are where we are. i still think the mgmt team are getting too many things fundamentally wrong - which i guess means there's many areas we can still improve. on paper, i still believe we have a top half squad. game at a time i suppose.
Re: Bad Maths alert! In reality it's 0.71 PPG which equates to 33 points and 24th position. Which is where we could be at 5pm today.
Re: Bad Maths alert! Thats true but not the point you were making above - You said that 5 points from 3 games wasnt a good enough return to guarantee us survival when it is - if we can average that for the rest of the season we will be fine
Re: Bad Maths alert! We could also be out of the bottom 3 by 5pm. The Fowls will draw, Yeovil will lose and Bournemouth will beat Bolton 6 - 0.
Re: Bad Maths alert! I thought that there were some positives - I think that the back four is settled and looking much more steady than earlier in the season. M'Voto is looking ok for me, but I think that more street-wise forwards than Frank Nouble will be trying (and probably succeeding) to get a penalty out of him, so some words needed from management about it before it happens. Can't fault Wiseman's display last night and I though Cranie had a solid game, apart from the getting blocked for the corner from which Ipswich scored. The midfield is my greatest concern. Fox is just not doing it for me. He is supposed to be our master-mind, especially at set-pieces, but how bad were all our set-pieces last night? When did we last score from one? We need a Jon Obi-Mikel, or Shaun Derry-type of player in front of our back four to give additional protection and to be the bridge-head for counter-attacks. Fox has disappointed in this role. The other problem with the flat-four midfield is lack of pace, other than Perkins. Look what a difference O'Brien made last night, because he had pace and used it to pull the defence around. Mellis is wasted out wide and I would start with JOB in his place next game, unless we switch to a midfield diamond, in which case Mellis should play in the hole behind the front two. The front two did ok at their own streengths. O'Grady held the ball up well and got headers on against some pretty robust physical stuff, which was good, but he does not have pace, so needs to be laying off to someone with pace. Pedersen put himself about ok and looks dangerous when he gets possession. Could be sharper into the six-yard box, but he has grear potential, so keep giving him game-time. For me, midfield is still not quite right. Solid defensive midfielder needed at the back, who can tackle and spray passes and some width in at least two of the other midfield slots and away we go.
