To be honest, the fact that strikers take 5 of the top 6 spots tells me that it doesn't exactly equally favour all positions. Scoring goals seems to be a premise for making you the best player in your position, as indicated by Ryan Shawcross leading the defenders as he scored 3 goals last month.
Aye, slanted towards goal scorers... can't understand why, I mean its hardly the most important facet of the game....
that statistics like those compiled by actim do not show how good a player is. does a keeper get more points for saving harder shots or mor powerful crosses? does a striker lose 1 point for every 1 yard wide of the net his shot goes? The stats are good to show how active a player is but they dont really show how GOOD a player is
Don't be stupid.. Of course scoring goals is the most important facet of football. But it is NOTa defenders job and I don't think his defending should be overlooked because he's scored goals.
Ryan Shawcross isn't the top defender there because he's defended better than everyone else - he's the top defender there because he's scored a few goals. As far as I was aware, JohnnyCoachman has trumpeted this system because it considers every aspect of a players game - and I hazard a guess that I consider to be fairly safe that Ryan Shawcross has not been the best defender in this league this season.
You don't need to jump to JohnnyCoachman's defence everytime someone disagrees with him - all I suggested was that there was no way a system like this could be entirely accurate. Brian Howard is 5th on that midfielders list because he's scored 4 penalties to add to his 3 in open play - not because he's been particularly brilliant.

Why don't you contact Actim and ask them.
You are saying the stats are crap without knowing how they do the analysis of the raw data.
Are you actually saying that Muller and Howard are not as good as the ratings suggest?

you berk how have I jumped to his defence and I cant even remeber the last time I did. Nevertheless I don't understand how the Actim Index works, and I'll wager, niether do you. Maybe in the case of shawcross, the number of tackles he makes, passes made, other defensive work etc PLUS goals scored makes him, on the whole, top of the tree.
Perhaps they produce tables for the best defender minus the goals for a true appreciation of a players purely defensive skills - no doubt available for a price.

How is the Actim Index calculated? How is the Actim Index calculated? Complex mathematical formulae were devised to calculate the value of each player's contribution, match by match. In simple terms, the Actim Index comprises four calculations: * Calculation 1 - Assesses a player's contribution to a winning team, based on points won by the team when he appeared. * Calculation 2 - Assesses a player's performance in each game, by allocating points for actions that positively contribute to a winning performance such as shots, tackles, clearances and saves. It also takes points away from players for negative actions such as yellow/red cards and shots off target. * Calculation 3 - Allocates points based on time on the pitch. * Calculation 4 - Allocates points for goal scorers. * Calculation 5 - Allocates points for assists. * Calculation 6 - Allocates points for clean sheets.
Yes Howard has been pretty poor this season, even tho he has scored goals, he has not played as well as last season. But I dont think there will ever be a system that can legislate between the different positions , They can only show how good a player is doing in their position. Where did Devaney finish last year in those tables? He was pretty high up , I think so anyway, but I would not have said he was one of the best players in the division.
RE: you berk Perhaps you weren't jumping to his defence there, sorry. This place is just becoming incredibly tedious as it seems you're not entitled to an opinion about anything anymore. Used to really enjoy coming on here- now its more like a chore, judging by the constant stream of negativity and arguing.
No bother Trouble on here is that you get the same old arguments from the same old people. I abandon 75% the posts I start because I just cant be arsed.
You don't have to know how they're calculated to know... ...that statistics can never show the complete picture. Just one mathematical simplified view of real life. That's not to say they can't be useful or entertaining mind. But it is a bit tash the way Actim make such a song and dance out of them.. That said, hurray that Muller is top of em!
