No surprise. In the space of a year we have gone from being a reasonably attractive club to being the least attractive club in the Championship.
Don't be ridiculous, bigger clubs have more money and bigger fan bases. Any team that pays more and gets more in the ground will always be and has always been a more attractive option for a player. Players go to the best option at the time they are available. If we are the best option they will come if not, they will go elsewhere.
So basically we are only able to sign the players that the rest of the Championship dont want. How very fu.c,king depressing.
I'd say we were when we signing Shackell, O'Connor, Harewood and McShane. That all ended just over a year ago.
That was two years ago, completely different budget then. I don't think Carayol was a target this window anyway.
They were playing for us in April/May 2011 so I make that nearer to one year than two. Since that time we can no longer attract players of their calibre.
I know they're pretty much one and the same, but it's not particularly the club, more the budget that is less attractive. If the current budget keeps us afloat and we make a profit, then so be it.
Seeing as he's from the bottom division According to some, he was automatically **** when Barnsley tried to sign him in January, but is now a decent player because Middlesbrough are in for the lad.
I'm not saying it was you, but it wasn't that long ago some people were proclaiming that Mido was one of the biggest name signings ever to come to the club!
We were attractive because Mr Cryne was paying wages out of his back pocket (O'Connor, Harewood etc) and underwriting transfers (Shackell).
And we finished so high in the league with over priced mercenaries wanting their exaggerated wages paid. A footballer will move to a club because he gets games, gets paid huge amounts, its convenient or a mixture. Mellis is a good signing, Etuhu I think is a good signing and if, and its a big if but its possible, we can get Mido fit, then that could be a good signing. Just because rumours don;t turn into reality, it doesn;t mean we're unattractive. The more Hill can develop players, the better chance we have of providing a convincing argument to those who aren't getting games and may see the allure of cash for sitting on your bum become less attractive.
It's not all about money and crowds. If we had kept Vaz Te till the end of the season and finished in the top half like we were when he left, we would have looked a much more attractive team then we ended up looking with our bad form, and might have had more of a chance of picking up the many targets who have turned us down.
No, clearly not about money or crowds at all. Vaz Te must have left us to go to West Ham for the air quality in the east end!
Wouldn't dispute that. Regardless of the reasons, we were a more attractive proposition to players in the 2010/11 season than we are now. Fact.
