First off, what a fantastic 3 points. The pure relief of seeing that header squirm through Alnwick's gloves can't be described. Completely made up for 45 of the most frustrating minutes of the season. The sending off was the worst thing that could have happened. Not only did it fire up their players, but they stopped playing from the back. Up until then our high pressing game was reaping the awards of winning the ball high up the field. The sending off resulting in them taking less risks at the back and demonstrated some of the most embarrassingly obvious time wasting I've ever experienced. Fair play to the players in the second half who tried to play football all the way to the end. We resisted the urge to launch it into the box at every opportunity, although I'll be the first to admit that I was getting frustrated that they weren't! That's why I belong in the stands! Even before the goal, George Williams was very close to my MOTM along with the ever improving Marc Roberts. The club deserves credit for digging this little gem out of non-league. Along with Roberts, he seemed to win everything in the air and always picked the right pass. I never feel nervous while the ball is in his area of the field, which I can't say the same regarding Bree, who I feel still has a mistake in him from time to time. Scowen has done a terrific job at RB the last 2 games. Complete professional who has never dissented (unlike his Dad on twitter!) about being on the bench in favour of Brownhill. Who, might I say, should be the first to lose his place when we have another fit full back so Scowen can come back into the middle. Ivan Toney - the less said about him the better. Completely inept. I'll be completely surprised that any one of our lads in the academy could have done a worse job. Hecky should have made the change at Half-time to put Fletcher on. Anyway, on to the next game. Will be picking my Tickets up on Thursday for Bumhole Lane. I'll happily take a draw now but a win (along with 3 points against Colchester) should see us in the top 6. #COYR
Fair summary that. Just to add to the frustration, I thought the crowd were getting on the players back a bit in that 2nd half due to not creating as many chances against 10 men as they did in the first half. The goal came just in time and showed the fine line between success and failure. I'm pretty sure several of our fans would have booed them off the pitch had we not scored but in an instant they were applauding them off the field.
it was a strange night. chance after chance came and went. alnwick looked like he was never going to be beat. they rallied with 10 men and were defending for their lives. they weirdly came for a point, which i thought was bizarre for a team with nothing to play for. the patience they showed was amazing really. they never looked like they were panicking, but with time running down you could feel the frustration in the crowd with the clock ticking down. i would have personally leathered anyone who booed that performance. they gave everything
Hourihane didn't cover himself with glory for the sending off and I suppose, hope it's the last bit of petulance we see from him, cos it has been building up this season.
their player put himself in the situation, but i wasn't happy with conor at all. even less so having seen the replays.
"...and demonstrated some of the most embarrassingly obvious time wasting I've ever experienced" really ? Did you not go to Huddersfield vs Barnsley ? Wouldn't change it, but lets be honest, that was time wasting x 10
was it? from what i remember, the ball was in play. that's running the clock down in open play. that's different to taking for ever to get the ball back in play.
Slightly different - at Huddersfield, the ball was live and in-play. A keeper can hold the ball at his feet for as long as he likes. Strikes me that the Town players were more culpable, deciding that none of them would close down Steele and force him to kick the ball downfield. Last night was the more traditional timewasting - spending an age retrieving the ball, placing the ball for goal-kicks, throw-ins going through 2/3 pairs of hands before deciding who's taking it. Not comparable, imho.
One thing that seems to have been forgotten about...at the time we were sitting down we were being relegated..we were unknowingly wasting our own time....it was only Palace's? late goal that kept us up.
I seem to remember palace scoring and then and only then as both us and Huddersfield were safe we both stopped playing.
Correct. Although we were still taking a risk as if Peterborough had scored another after we had stopped playing we would have looked liked arses.
