I started my (Vista) computer up and it did one of those scans with the black screen before anything else happened.

Now Vista looks like Window XP, Nokia Software doesn't work, Internet Explorer doesn't open, McAfee keeps saying my computer isn't protected. What the f*ck is going on?

Yet again Windows Vista shows itself to be light years behind Macs software

    Not an expert on Vista

but step 1 - have you shut it down completely and started again - if a laptop its sometimes worth removing the battery to ensure everything is really shut down.

If that doesnt fix it I assume vista kept the System restore feature so restore to the last good restore point. If restore isnt enabled from your description - almost sounds like it has booted in Safe mode could be a corrupt driver

    I know what's happened here.

You've got pissed up and ended up sat at someone else's computer in someone else's house in Chapeltown. The bloke's come home and you've chinned him and knocked him out on the pavement. Try to focus your thoughts and look around you. Notice all the other unfamiliar things. You don't own a parrot and you don't keep your dead mother in the freezer.

Can you do a system restrore on vista?

If you can choose one of the backup dates before your computer went weird and restore it back to that point. Worked on my XP machine when the sound went funny!

Had similar problems last week. Took me hours of messing till I finally reinstalled everything minus McAfee. Get AVG instead. Never had a prob since running great. Computer is a Dell by the way.
