My Crewe Match Review/Rant

Hi all, long time floater here who hasn't been able to grow the balls to actually post up until now... you're a ruthless bunch! :nails:

I've been supporting The Reds since the 2006 promotion, so I missed out on the glory years - you could call me a 'young un' (21)

I've had a season ticket the past 3 seasons, missed the Keith Hill season and had a season ticket the 2 seasons before that - if that works out right?

Anyway, I started a fantasy football/barnsley blog a couple of weeks ago and I've posted my first match review/rant:

Because of work, I haven’t been able to make it to the past 3 home games (4 including Everton) – so that makes my last visit to Oakwell the first match of the season, when we only managed to score against Burton because of a penalty. Between now and then I’ve pretty much been out of touch apart from reading people’s reviews online – but with wins over Swindon, Gillingham and coming out feeling badly done to against Doncaster, I was really looking forward to a guaranteed 3 points against bottom of the League.

Seeing as I’d only spent 90 minutes watching The Reds this season beforehand, I spent most of the first 10 minutes familiarizing myself with players from afar – deciding we don’t have enough bearded players to make things easier. Shortly after, I was welcomed back to Oakwell with Crewe’s free kick and first shot on target easily making it past Townsend after his abysmal attempt of building a wall. Luckily I didn’t have too long to sulk through Mawson’s instant reply – yet another set piece assist from Hourihane.

Without set pieces and without Hourihane, we really would be in trouble. I don’t understand why Johnson has to make things so difficult for us, especially against such a poor team. We’re trying to be the Barcelona of League 1… and the only thing we’re getting right about that is “Bar”.

Pretty much every attack was from a lobbed ball down the wing to either Harris or Watkins, which they locked onto about 20% of the time. Now at this level, that’s no fault of their own – we can’t expect them to be on the end of a 80 yard pass every time, getting it under control every time – that’s a fault of our tactics. We worried about the big target man when we dropped to this tier, we worried about matching the ‘League 1 style’ of football… yet we’re trying our hardest NOT to play it!

We should be keeping things simple. I’m a football fan, not a football manager, so I know nothing about the game and can’t even tell you the formation we played against Crewe. Whatever it is we’re playing though, it isn’t working and we need to go back to basics – why is there such a fear of playing 4-4-2?! Complaints aside, I got to watch Kadeem Harris for the first time, who is an absolute gem that we can hopefully get back to Oakwell on a longer-term deal. Without Harris and our very own Scowen I might actually have fallen to sleep.

In true Barnsley fashion, Crewe found themselves in the lead after being dominated – beating Nick Townsend at the near post. Looking back at the highlights, surely he should have got to it? The first name on the team sheet should be Adam Davies.

Another thing that doesn’t fill me with confidence is why Harris was taken off – why take off your best player when you’re losing? I also heard Johnson blaming the result on the linesman… more alarm bells. So what if we had 18 shots. 8 were on target and only 1 went in the back of the net.

Something needs to change or we’re going to be spending longer in this league than is comfortable. Should the change be the manager? No. He just needs a kick up the arse!!
