Colgan 6 - Good penalty save was important, but it was his mistake that caused the spot-kick in the first place. Bad mistake in first half too, plus spilt another couple of shots, though just recovered those in time. Austin 7 - Another solid display from Ozzy, not a lot gets past the fella it must be said. Kay 7 - Made a couple of characteristic minor errors but all in all did a pretty good job. If he concentrates for 90 minutes, he's okay at centre-half. Carbon 8 - Back to the form he showed in the first couple of games last season before his injury and loss of form. Can he stay fit? If he can, could be a key player. Good in the air, strong, and almost did a Tony Vaughan-esque dribble round half the Swindon team before pulling a shirt and giving away a free-kick. Tonge 8 - Safe, solid, dependable. Good in the air, strong tackler. Everything you need in a full-back. Williams 7 - Another decent performance from Robbie tarnished by the sending-off. However, his commitment to the cause is excellent and he'll be sorely missed in the next 2 games. His strength is his biggest asset. McPhail 7 - Got stuck in!! Very vocal in captain's role, bossing people around in the right way. Not afraid to have shots on goal (though they need to improve a bit Macca!). It appears he's woken up and smelt the League One coffee. Burns 7 - Steady as always, playing a key role again in breaking up Swindon's passing (when they didn't just lump it up to two short forwards). Supported the forwards regularly, and helped protect the defence. Shuker 7 - Took his goal supremely well. Hard working as always, one or two excellent crosses, though the gripe is still that possibly his cross completion rate could be a tad higher. Hayes 8 (MOTM just) - Looks a class act. Great goal, almost scored an even better one just after. Worked hard, linked up well with Nardiello. One or two lovely touches, including a back heel which found it's desired target, not just a bit of showing off. Excellent prospect, let's just hope that Scunny don't crock him on Tuesday. Nardiello 7 - Bad penalty miss, but looked sharp, worked well with Hayes as mentioned. His close ball control in the area is fantastic and helped create Shuker's killer goal. Worked harder than in the past too. Subs: Conlon 6 - Not much time to impress for Baz, but worked hard to help defend the lead with 10 men. Needs to be a bit meaner though I suggest. Wroe 7 - A risky sub with only 10 men possibly, but justified Ritchie's decision by working very hard, getting a lot more stuck in than ever seen before. Looked okay in attack too apart from dallying when one on one with last defender and losing ball. A pat on the back deserved.
Colgan made 2 mistakes, and looked uneasy in other things he did, like almost letting a shot from I think it was Smith almost slip through his fingers.
Are you happy if he makes 2 or 3 great saves a week but also 2 ****-ups? Those ****-ups will often be punished and will cost us points, ala last season.
All keepers will make errors, unfortunately they are often highlighted more as a result of their position. I honestly cannot remember the last keeper we had that was consistent - they have all been much of a muchness for 10 years or so. What does annoy me though are fans (not saying you here) who are inconsistent in opinion, Scarsella for instance I recall made a howler but people got behind him and that helped his performance, Colgan does it and people are booing and having a go. It doesn't help them, as we said, Colgan is a good shot stopper, not good at coming off his line for balls, but then again if he was good at both he'd be playing at a higher level than L1.
I know what you mean about him being a good shot stopper - ones like the Thorpe chance today... However, I remember a number of shots he should have saved last season - about 3 at Man City for a start... and he should have saved Healy's goal last Saturday. However... I am willing to give him a chance - all I've said is that he must improve and not make 2 errors a game. I have never said he should be dropped after today. I wouldn't drop him for Scunny.
