This will probably come across as incredibly fickle but my decision on whether or not to get a season ticket is hinging on whether Steele stays or not. I haven't had a season ticket for 12 years but have been really thinking about one this summer along with introducing my daughter to watching the super reds. However it is beyond me why the club are not doing all they can to tie Steele down to the kind of deal that will make him want to stay. Like many others have said he has saved us far more times than he has cost us and his best years are still to come. To become established at Championship level we must get tougher at the back and a good quality keeper is a must. Steele fits the bill and also clearly loves the club and publicly spoke up for Flitcroft to be given the job. I may seem fickle but if Steele leaves and his not replaced with a keeper of similar quality ( I don't rate Alnwick) then I think it will be another season of just picking my games for me. Anyone else feel the same or am I being unfair?
So, Alnwick for skipper then? that was the worst decision of last season, making a bloody goalie the captain, ridiculous! Should be centre-half or centre midfield all day, every day.....
I can't believe anyone would make a decision on whether to get a season ticket or not based on whether one player stays or goes. I'd love Steele to stay but I'm a fan of Barnsley not individual players & I'll still be a fan long after Steele, Flitcroft & others leave the club.
Why not take it a stage further and base your decision on who the groundsman is, or who is serving the pies in the kiosk? You could even decide whether to attend on a match by match basis, depending on who the mascot is?
I agree with a lot of what you have said but to refuse to get a season ticket if they don't keep Steele is just not right. We need as many fans as possible to progress and after last season Flicker and his team deserve that support to be unconditional.
I don't think our own manager knows what he's on about with Steele. Take the Chronicle back page from last friday for example. In the main article he mentions how when players reach a certain age at Manchester United they offer one year contracts and that's the example to follow. Yet in his own column a mere few inches to the left the headline was "Let's create our indentity and not follow other clubs" so dunno which he wants with contradicting himself on the same newspaper page between the two articles.
Laugh my ****** off if both, Steele and the Hass sign new contracts....Lots of folk scrabbling around to find the latest excuse to not go darn 'Well....
I don't think it is being unreasonable, it's a divisive issue. Support isn't unconditional. You have to believe what you are buying into and if you don't agree with something on principle, it's fair to demonstrate that.
For some it is unconditional. See "I'm Spartacus". Next in line for the TT Best Fan/True Reds at Luton Award.
Just for balance There's also others whose criticism of the club is also unconditional. The club is always in the wrong, so persistent criticism of anything to do with Barnsley Football Club whilst still attending matches is indicative of being a 'true' or 'real' fan in their own eyes. There seemed to be quite a number of these when I was in the steel industry, for all the local clubs.
Re: Just for balance To be fair, they were probably right most of teh time given how much Booth and co stagnated that club.
Re: Just for balance It was like that before Booth took over and even Tony Stewart has had to put up with it. At the supporters meeting last month, one fan actually said to Stewart & Steve Evans that "Despite moving the club back to Rotherham, having a new ground and winning promotion, we've had a pretty poor season"!
Simply stated that you will find any excuse to knock the club and therefore only offer support from your soapbox.
I think you will find I don't. And I don't have a sopabox old ****. Or if I have, it is only similar to thine.
