I have had the pleasure of playing v both Futchers at 5 a side - Paul was a mare - 2 moves in front of everyone else- immaculate without trying. Ron however was slow and didn't like been tightly marked (half a foot taller and 2 stone heavier than me than me but I gave him a good game) - hard to believe he was Pauls bro on that performance - however it must be said they were in their late 30s/early 40s when I played in this game. I was peaking at age 28!! ......anyone else got any tenuous link to playing footy v ex/current players??
I played in a 5 a side tournament against Glavin, Miller , Peachey and Gary Pierce, bloody hard to get the ball off em
I played in a charity match against a team of ex reds Glavin,Parker,Barraclough etc, tell you what you think watching from the side lines it looks easy but trying to mark Ronnie even in in semi retirement was a friggin nightmare but I enjoyed every minute
11 a side against allan clarkes 85/86 team was a kid of 12 playing for barnbourgh and harlington , had a tour of oakwell and allan clark got the team to play us after training ... proper good fun , we lost 1 - 0 to a dodgy penalty that clarke gave em .. steve agnew smashed it in the net after the whole team had run up and done a step over!
I played a 'friendly' five a side game down at the Well against Thordasson, Ronnie Glavin, Noel Blake etc. Our team had a secret bet on anyone to nutmeg Glavin. We never got near the bloke, he didn't move very well but the ball wasn't with him for very long either, his vision and passing were immaculate, it was an absolute pleasure to watch. As for Noel Blake, no-one dare go anywhere near him!!
Speaking of Wayne Biggins... I sat about a yard away from him on a coach back from Cheltenham races, whilst he got his **** out for all to see! He's also got a Wednesday tattoo on his calf....
Nicky Wroe... Played junior football with him for about 2/3 years. None of us could believe he made a pro.......
Ahem.....marked Stewart Barrowclough in Sunday league years ago. Well, his shadow at any rate. Played against Man City old boys about seven years ago against Mike Lester. I had to mark Peter sodding Barnes. My legs are still in knots. Played pool against Gordon Owen and cricket against Ian Walsh and Steve Agnew. Glyn Riley used to train us in a Sunday league side when he still played for Barnsley. My missus has played tennis with Nicky Law when she was younger.
I got sent off for telling John Schofield to '**** off'............ and we were on the same team...... during a Hoyland Common v Worsbrough High School game many, many moons ago. (For the uniniated, he played for Lincoln city). One year when we played against Lincoln in a pre-season game he got sent off for kicking lumps out of Steve Agnew who, funnily enough, was in the year below.
RE: Gordon Owen I played against him early 90s. He played for West Green. I was right back he was left mid and I kept showing him the line so I could keep him on his wrong foot and maybe crunch him if he had a go. Of course he knew that and always came back inside and passed the ball into midfield. Although they beat us I sort of had the last laugh as he was in front of goal, keeper beaten but took enough time for me to nip in and take it off his toe end.
Here goes, played in goal with and against in different charity matches. Ronnie Glavin, Barry Murphy, Stewart Barrowclough, Gerry Taggart, Joe Joyce, Steve Agnew, Mark Robinson, Kenny Brown, Brendan O'Connell. Clive Baker, Laura Herring, Alistair Millar. Plus Gorden Owen, Steve Agnew and Clive Baker at cricket. Also reffed Mick McCarthy in junior matches. Once poured a bottle of red wine over a table narrowly missing Laura Herring.
