Went to watch the new Ridley Scott film Napoleon today , a few things a bit not quite right but a fantastic film to go and see. Battle scenes filming was worth the cost of the film. 5 star for me.
The criticism is apparently from the French side, historical inaccuracies, I think the phrased used was "it's made from the point of view from the English side". Not sure it's true as I haven't seen it, but as a stand alone film it's supposed to be very good
There are different schools of thought about this. I've seen plenty of "historical" films that I've known or at least suspected to be quite inaccurate but I've enjoyed them all the same. However, sometimes it's really bothered me. Bohemian Rhapsody is a case in point. The first half is pretty good and the individual performances are generally excellent. But the second half descends into a farcical fantasy, which was extremely disappointing.
I think it all depends on how it's marketed aswell, perhaps. Obviously films and TV programmes add in fiction/action/fantasy to make it more enjoyable, I think Oppenheimer was largely accurate from what I've read (not seen it yet), and it got advertised that way too, however I'd assume that was much easier than depicting Napoleon who fought in 60,70,80 battles and getting it into a 2 hour time frame as Kirky has said, leaving plenty to the imagine or creative tampering
Got to agree Oppenheimer was fantastic film both will be up for the Oscars but Oppenheimer will take the best actor from poor old Joaquin, even though he is a class act.
Both Cillian Murphy and Joaquin Phoenix are incredible actors. Joaquins life story is crazy interesting too
Have to concur the battle scences are intense but brilliantly made, gets a little drawn out in parts an hour or so in but worth a watch for sure. The French have an almost love hate relationship with bonaparte, certainly divides opinion, a genius madman often undone by self importance.
I suppose the Red sports car in the background didn't help. Apparantly was said at the time, seen in Ben Hur in the chariot scene. Watched it a few times I've never seen it. Copied During the same chariot race, some viewers say they have spotted a red sports car zooming past in the background. This has been dismissed as a myth, with Charlton Heston saying in an audio commentary that the claim is untrue.
Agreed. Bohemian Rhapsody was marketed as a biopic, whereas it was actually a clichéd rock and roll film with Freddie Mercury as the lead character. Braveheart never claimed to be a historical film, so it's actually quite good if you enjoy ancient warriors hacking each other to pieces. But if you're watching it to learn anything whatsoever about British history, you'll be sorely disappointed (or worst case scenario fail your GCSE).
History has seen a fair few of those to be fair, from Isaac Newton to Elon Musk, and plenty in between.
I recently listened to an audiobook of his life - its about 30 hours long - there's ALOT to fit in, so inevitably some things will get skipped which people think should have been included, and others which shouldn't - like most films, I'm sure some of the chronology won't be right and some things done for effect, but if you listen to his life story there's enough mad stuff to make a cracking film, so I'm so looking forward to seeing it tomorrow!!
A Rolex Apparantly. if you read up on Ben Hur Gaffes. Quite a few. But not the racing car. even though many have claimed to have seen it.
He was definitely a very contradictory character - made many progressive reforms and seemed genuinely concerned for the ordinary person and had a generous forgiving streak, on the other hand he was an absolute relentless liar and treated life as something completely disposable.
