Nardiello in fitness race STRIKER Daniel Nardiello faces an 11th hour fitness test ahead of the match with Yoevil tomorrow. He damaged a hamstring in shooting practice on Tuesday and missed training yesterday but manager Andy Ritchie would not rule him out of his starting line-up. "We just don't know at this stage. His recovery has been encouraging so far," Ritchie reported. Defender Bobby Hassell came through his first full workout with the first team yesterday. He has been out since the start of the season with a knee problem. He will not be involved tomorrow but could be in the reserves next week. Both Barnsley keepers, Nick Colgan and Scott Flinders, have returned from international duty in Dublin and Moscow respectively. Colgan, who was on the bench for the Republic of Ireland on Wednesday night is set to continue as Ritchie's first choice. Flinders, who was with the England Under-20 squad, will be on the bench again. Ritchie is looking for his team to bounce back from a dismal performance at Colchester and a 1 -0 defeat. "I don't think that after one bad performance I should be axing people. That would be out of order," he stressed. "But we do not want a repeat. Yeovil aren't a bad side, they're busy and they work hard for each other and they play football." Tomorrow marks the first match between the clubs. Barnsley (from): Colgan, Tonge, Carbon, Reid, Austin, Shuker, Burns, McPhail, Williams, Hayes, Conlon, Nardiello, Flinders, Vaughan, Kay, Jarman, Wroe. Barnsley currently have two players on trial. They are Czech Republic striker Lubimor Blahha and former Manchester City academy kid Jamie Tandy, who is a left sided midfield player. Tandy could play for Barnsley reserves next week if he continues to impress Ritchie.
I know - I was amazed. I still think he'll get 30 goals though. It just means he'll have to score 5 goals in every game he plays from now on. Good luck to the lad.
RE: I know - I was amazed. No problem for Dan. Product of the Scum's academy, don't you know? For the life of me I can't understand why they released him.
Same here. They must be mad - releasing a lumbering striker with a neural problem which restricts him to 20 games per season. I hear he did it during shooting practise. I daren't say anymore.
Pro's & Con's of Danny Nardiello: Pro's: He's an excellent finisher. Con's: He has a spinal problem that makes him run like a spaz. He's not very good in the air. He lacks pace. You might get 20 games per season out of him. He's never scored prolifically in the football league. Would I prefer Conlon to Nardiello? No - Danny knows where the net is, but as I've already said - he's not a target man , he's not nippy little striker ... he's just a finisher. I think he'll be lucky to get a dozen this season.
RE: Pro's & Con's of Danny Nardiello: Summed up pretty nicely. Sometimes - only sometimes, mind - you actually sound like you know what you're talking about.
I made it all up. I prefer to listen to Jay talk about football. He's never wrong & has families in the Midlands reading through his mid-season analysis on a regular basis. His 'play Kay up front' idea is up there with the Theory of Relativity. Jay equals C&A square.
RE: Pro's & Con's of Danny Nardiello: Danny "knows where the net is" - well he had me fooled at the Swindon game. You forgot a con Stands offside more than David Currie
RE: Pro's & Con's of Danny Nardiello: That's obviously covered by the lack of pace and neural problems. It takes much longer for him to realise that he's on his own with no-one within a 20 yard radius, and then he's not quick enough to do anything about it.
Richie on radio sheff states its same problem as last season, hope we've not signed a croc to add to other 2.
