If Chopra wasnt offered a new contract at Newcastle and was told to find another club then would he be allowed to sign for someone for free, and no compensation would be required to pay to newcastle?

He has been offered a new 1 year deal at newcastle as far as most sources claim.
This is likely to be just enough for newcastle to be due compensation.
The compensation can only be justifiable recompense for training expenses. Residual value is not considered.

I know that But what if he wasnt offered a new contract, would compensation be due still?
I've heard yes and no, just want to know the facts!

In answer to that Wayne..... If they didn't offer him a contract on the same terms as the one he had now then he could leave for diddly squat.
I hope that helps

Basically If they 'want' to keep him (offer him a similar contract), but he decideds to go, then the club can claim compo, which may be decided at a tribunal. This is usually decided AFTER the player has gone. So has little impact on which club he may join, AND, the smaller the new club, especially if in lower leagues, the less compo they tend to pay. If they don't want to keep him, and not offer him a new contract, then he can go for free, wherever he chooses. The compensation basically provides a little insurance for bringing players through the Academy etc. So why the £500k figure mentioned for Chopra? It could be that Cardiff may buy him before his contract runs out at the end of this month, rather than face paying compo. However, it is worth noting, that Arsenal paid £1m compo for Fabregas (age 16) from Barcelona. But I don't rate Chopra as high as him, so in my opinion, £500k seems a little high.....
