Have you noticed though that when we score early the general view is that we can't defend the lead to the end of the game, but if our opponents score early, we can't break down their packed defence. Very reminiscent of BFC in fact.

If we're too scared to attack because we might concede it's time to pack in. The whole idea of football is a simple one. Score more goals than the opposition to win. Doesn't matter how you do that but it's easier to try to score more goals than it is to defend. Regardless of ability. It's better to change down than try to change up. This side going a goal down in defensive mode would be a disaster. It's a simple game ruined by morons like Southgate.
