Rush drummer has just announced he is to be retiring. I did hear this earlier this year that a persistent back complaint was hampering him when playing the drums. So glad I managed to see him play in Toronto in June. Looks like Rush may never tour again.
An old army mate and me had a long running argument about who was the best drummer; Peart or Keith Moon (Moon was my choice). I never got to see Rush, but I've seen loads of online clips of him, mainly as a result of those friendly discussions. He's a very technically gifted drummer (but not as good as Moon).
That's a shame, doesn't Alex Lifeson also have to battle arthritis on the guitar too? Would have loved to see them one more time but they didn't do any UK/European dates on this last tour - well done for getting to Toronto.
What about John Bonham? OH and I was very fortunate. Only realised that Rush were playing the ACC after I had booked my flight. Saw them on the last day of my holiday. 25k capacity audience. Superb show.
I like zep and rush and have seen both, (more than once) and I'm sad to see Neil is packing in. He is a superb drummer and a master of his art, but you will never beat John Bonham's driving beat. One on his own.
Peart is better than both Bonham and Moon. John Bonham is quite possibly the most overrated drummer of all time.
All opinions mate. But to come away with such sweeping statements as Bonham being the most overrated drummer of all time is just silly. But of course it is just your opinion.
I often agree with you CT but not on this. Add Baker to the list and you've got the best four drummers ever (IMO). Moon tops the list for me.
No better drummer for Rush than Neil Peart, no better drummer for the Who than Moon and no one better foe Zep than Bonham. It's the combination of musicians that make bands great and it doesn't always mean that a more technically gifted player will suit every band.

Seen Rush twice in the last ten years, loved both shows (wish I'd have seen them in Toronto, missed them by a week last time I visited). Difficult to compare with Bonham, partly cos I never saw him, partly cos Peart's 'show' was very technology-based and more than just a drum solo. He is also a great author - if you get the chance I would read his book 'Ghost Rider' which tells the story of his travels on his motorbike around the continent of North America which was his way of coping with his grief after losing his daughter (car accident) and wife (cancer) within a year of each other. Superbly written.
Great drummer , seen Rush a few times over the years not a massive fan though. Bonham another great drummer that I've seen but again not a massive Zep fan more of an Ian Paice / Deep Purple fan myself but the best drummer I've seen play live is Billy Cobham
He's good but not in the same league as the others. If I were to use a football analogy Powell would be playing for a UEFA cup spot.
One of my favourite Pete Townhend quotes... "Mooney the best drummer on earth? He's not the best drummer in The Who"
Not silly at all. Whenever you see these top drummer polls Bonham is always in the top five. I reckon I could name 50 better drummers without even having to think about it.
I'd put Ginger Baker above Moon but below Peart. All Bonham does is hold the beat. There is nothing exciting about his drumming imho.
Neil Peart Keith Moon Ginger Baker Iain Paice Nicko McBrain Bill Ward Darren Cesca Hannes Grossman Conny Pettersson Adrian Erlandson Steve Flynn Etienne Gallo Blake Richardson Bobby Jarzombek Paul Mazurkiewicz Ken Owens John Merryman Mark Edelmann Steve Shelton Stanton Moore Witold Kyeltika Fenriz Mike Portnoy Kevin Talley Lyle Cooper Florent Mounier Mario Duplantier John Longstreth Chris Adler Pete Sandoval Mike Smith Dave Lombardo Paul Bostaph Mike Smith For starters.
HaHaHa I canna believe you went to all that bother mate. Gotta say quite a few names I do not recognize there but really, at the end of the day it is all opinions. No one right and no one wrong. But as tykesfan says in post 10. Each and every drummer suited to their band and style of music. Anyway so in your opinion all these drummers are better than John Bonham. Well who am I to argue with your obvious superior knowledge of all things drumming. Well done on compiling your list.
