BARNSLEY Legend and promotion winning captain Neil Redfearn has backed his former team mates Andy Ritchie and Rick Holden to take the Reds back into the Championship this weekend. The 39-year-old lined up alongside Andy and Rick during his time at Oldham Athletic between 1990 and 1991. Neil arrived at Oakwell in September 1991 and went on to make 338 first team appearances, netting an amazing 84 goals from midfield. An inspirational captain, he led by example as the club won promotion to the Premiership in 1997 and throughout the following season in the top flight. He left during the summer of 1998 for another crack at Premiership football at Charlton Athletic. Speaking exclusively to www.barnsleyfc.co.uk, Neil said: "Obviously Barnsley can go to Cardiff and win the game. They went to Huddersfield trailing 1-0 and with the home side as strong favourites but I think Andy (Ritchie) got things tactically spot on. "On that day Barnsley's big players all put in big performances. I thought the wide players - Martin Devaney and Paul Hayes - were outstanding and the whole team looked really strong with a lot of pace. They are more than capable of doing that again on Saturday. "It will all come down to whoever keeps their heads. It is a massive match and sometimes the team who makes the least mistakes wins. Barnsley will have to be brave and go out to take the game by the scruff of the neck. I genuinely feel that this Barnsley side has four or five big game players and matchwinners in it so hopefully they can do it. "The Barnsley fans are fantastic. I will never, ever forget my time with the club and I still regard them as my people. That will never change and that kind of support was always our twelfth man on the pitch. "This Club has been through some hard times in recent years but they were always a steady second tier team. The Premier League was fantastic and really gave everybody a huge boost so hopefully this team can bring some success back to those supporters. "Barnsley supporters are fanatical about their club, their town and their county and winning promotion on Saturday will be fantastic for them. "It has been a great season and I have to give a lot of credit to my former team mates Andy and Rick. They are football people and have achieved a lot so far this year. Hopefully will be a reason to celebrate come the end of Saturday's game".
