all to do with out of contract players having to wait to sign for clubs due to transfer windows etc, kids looks to have a fair case

The key part is when their contract ended. So if your contract ends (or is terminated) the day before the transfer deadline then you are free to sign with any club whenever you want to. If your contract ends (or is terminated) the day after the window closes then you can't sign anywhere until the window opens back up again.

Really an easier way to look at it is that clubs cannot deregister a player when the window is closed rather than that they can't register one. Once the player isn'th registered with a club he can move as he wishes whenever he wishes.

It's the reason why Ben Alnwick's contract was cancelled when it was because it allowed him to find a new club at his leisure. If we had kept him on for another day and then cancelled it he'd be unemployable until January.
