I mean, look at his acheivments with Irelnad when he was the manager. He had a smaller amount of players to use and did bloody well In my view. As England boss he would have a lot more players to use. Just a Thought
Never really cut it at club level for me but I see what you're getting at. How about Ian Holloway as a random one, the sort of guy that players want to play for and respect. That's why I've always said Allardyce, he seems to get players playing for him, to want to win for him, against the odds. At the end of the day that's all that's required of the England manager (maybe apart from very thick skin)
RE: Never really cut it at club level for me Problem maybe with appointing someone like Holloway (since you used him as an example) is that most of the players in the squad will feel superior to him - because hes just a lower league manager (or a small club manager or whatever - depending on the person in question), perhaps feeling he doesnt deserve to have authority over them. Inexperience at that level could be seen as a massive problem - granted old Stevey Mac hadn't got international management experience, though he did have top level coaching experience (of course this wasn't enough however)
That's why I think we need someone with a track record at the highest level, preferably with international experience or at least experience of handling the egos in the squad

While your point is quite logical... and you're almost certainly right, the last few we've had have all had that kind of experience and it hasn't got us as far as I think it ought to. I'm starting to feel that we just need to try something very different to shake the whole system up. Again back to the example, I don't think much in life would phase Ian Holloway, and I hope he does top top jobs in the future. Then we'll see if he can handle it. By the way, Steve McClaren was better prepared to take over the England job than any other manager in my lifetime.
RE: While your point is quite logical... I see what you're saying. I guess in my eyes we need a mix of experience (either in being involved with top players - perhaps as a coach, though I'm not convinced - or managing a top club), blended with someone with a bit of passion. Sven certainly had the experience but seemed to miss the passion needed to give them a bollocking when needed.
It's tough, but I dont disagree when you say a major re-think is needed. But the F.A won't do that, they'll make a **** appointment and do sweet F.A to help the long term situation
