Its a post been done before but after sitting in the NYS yesterday l couldn't help thinking what a stadium we could have if it was the double of this. Yes there are a few boring oval templates of grounds but I didn't think the NYS was like that yesterday. We sit in a half empty Oakwell that's open to the elements, terrible acoustically and doesn't hold in an atmosphere. Yesterday there were 5000 Millers fans but due to the great acoustics of the ground it sounded a lot more, tight and compact. Oakwell needs some money spent on it to bring it in line and it's in a terrible location traffic wise, many away supporters comment on this. It's ok for its proximity to the town centre and stations. If an announcement was made in the next 5 or so years l wouldn't be disheartened to be leaving Oakwell.
Oakwell all the way. If we built a new ground it would be the size of the NYS or Keepmoat and would then hold us back forever. Maybe fill the corners in but we had no issues with noise retention before most of the crowd became apathetic
Oakwell everyday of week. Still got some character and heart about the place, not some soulless arena like the new ones. You know that it's Barnsley's ground as soon as you see it. I don't like any new grounds, except Wembley but that's cause of occasion, they all end up very similar. I don't know how any away fans can complain of the location, its only a 5 minute walk from train station and there's a massive car park. Can't do owt traffic wise, unless club/councill want to spend millions changing road layouts. We do need the corners closing up to keep the atmosphere in somehow though, but to do it with seats would be daft. I think doing something like Ibrox with corners would be better. IMHO , like.
That place didn't seem soulless yesterday and it was only half full. It creates a bit of a buzz around the town and in most instances improves the crowd. Something needs doing with Oakwell, Dimensions stand at the other corner, fill the corner of the Ponty in with seats, Videoboard, it's one of the most boring places to be on a Saturday some weeks! it's all money we haven't got though. I think moving the away fans to the North side of the West would improve the atmosphere, bring them closer to the home support and close the North to save money.
Thats the major complaint from away fans, especially the big followings, stuck in the car parks for hours on end because the grounds in the middle of terraced streets.
Its a fair point about the north stand, but i think closing it up would be a bit embarrassing. We should have just built the away stand the same size as Ponty. But then again we thought we'd be back up in Prem so it's understandable why we went for a bigger one.The atmosphere would be a lot better if the fans were closer though, instead of them being an acre apart. I read on footballgroundguide that some people were wondering why the North wasn't a home stand and they thought it should be. I always thought that if we ever become a high performing team, maybe even getting promoted again we should have half the north for home fans and half of the north and west for away, cause there's no doubt we'd sell out every game. Would create a better atmosphere too.
There's not really much we can do about that though, like I say unless the club buys the houses and knocks em all down to make wider roads. Surely it's the same at places like Liverpool Chelsea etc etc though?
Half the North Stand was given to home fans in Bassett's play-off season. I used to sit in there regularly. It's a great view as it's steeper than the Ponty. But in the winter months the sun shines straight in your eyes.
That's what I though, I weren't around much back then, dad couldn't afford to take me all time. I always think it's funny when it's raining and you see all away fans running up stands to get out of wet. Puffs!
Rotherham's ground doesn't even have an away carpark does it? At least Oakwell's got one. I suppose if away fans don't like it they could always park a 2 minute walk from the ground in one of the multi stories which is essentially what many did yesterday at rotherham. Their new ground is excellent for them but give me Oakwell any day. I could pick many faults with their ground but I won't because for them it is fantastic but all i'll say is im glad we've got Oakwell. Fill in the corners and replace the West Stand with an identical one to the East and we will have one of the best grounds in the region.
What a stupid thread!! We cant even afford a few experienced players let alone a 'new stadium' or to 'fill the corners in' - Jesus, folk have been to a new stadium and think 'I want one of those', get a grip. Oakwell for me everyday of the week, just a shame we cant have the standing areas back then we wouldnt be having these new stadiums that all look the same with the shiny plastic seating!! Liverpool fans have a lot to answer for in my opinion!
Re: Oakwell for me Oakwell all day everyday not many clubs got what we got and it's all in the same area
am happy to stay at oakwell as long as they start to let us piss up the wall round the back of the east stand like the old brewery stand days
