Thanks for the link. It's not something I usually bother with, but after the ins and out it's probably about time I got up to speed. Initial thoughts. We look like an average League One side. Possibly lacking up front, but time will tell. Still look a bit on the young side (but that could just be me getting older ). With the exception of Morris, I'm not bothered about anyone who has moved on. Good luck to all of them. I'm only interested now in whether these new lads can gel and make a fist of it. Obviously Duff's tactics, playing style, motivation techniques, etc will be crucial to that. Fingers crossed... You Reds!
I wondered why it was like that too? I could understand the club maybe not having a pic of him, but would have thought he had a squad #
As frustrating as it may be, I think we've got to hold off judgement of our overall squad until the transfer window closes. I suspect there is still a fair bit of change that needs to happen and we've still not broken the back of bridging the drop in revenue, on top of significant existing annual losses. Most or all incoming dealings are likely to be free transfers or loans and as much as it seems not to be getting consideration, some of our under 23's are going to have to be leant on over the course of a season. I think job one for Duff is to make us solid and organised. And ideally get a win on the board as early as possible to try and instil some belief in a bunch of players whose confidence got smashed last season. It's a tough ask, but it feels like we at least have a down to earth head coach to place some faith.
Fair point. I'll have to revisit the squad page at a later date. Just one more thing to add. We saw last season how easy it is to take a bunch of players with huge potential and turn them into a terrible side. But the reverse is also true and there have been many seasons in the past where we've been better than the sum of our parts. I really think Duff could give us one of those seasons.
I agree with you. I don't think the individual players are as bad as what manifest last season. But the whole club was a shambles from start to end last year and it just descended into a doom loop. I'd hope we can at least have fitter players in a more organised structure this season and that in itself should give us a better platform to start with. We've seen examples of players being written off before and coming back and doing well. I think I'm in a position of hope rather than expectation and just content to be patient given the scale of the rebuilding job at hand. I was thinking for comparators of our situation and I initially thought of when we were relegated under Wilson and had to start from near on scratch. But then we did have money for transfer fees and were able to pick up some very good players from the lower reaches and build on that in consecutive seasons. So I'm not quite sure we're in as healthy a place as that, but plenty of time to go. If we can get very good money for any or all of Collins, Andersen, Helik and Styles and potentially get Oduor and Leya Iseka off the books cost effectively, we might have a bit of money to get one or two players with a bit of quality in midfield and attack. You don't tend to need that much stardust to create a decent league 1 team.
