It's all Gudjon's fault !!!

Barnsley Building Society rescued

There will be no windfall for Barnsley savers in this takeover

The Yorkshire Building Society is to takeover its smaller rival, the Barnsley Building Society.
The Barnsley said it was protecting itself against the possible loss of up to £10m deposited with Icelandic banks.
The deal is the latest in the trend towards further consolidation among the UK's building societies.
The deal is expected to be completed by the end of the year and there will be no windfall for Barnsley savers, nor will there be a vote of members.
"The proposal follows swift, pre-emptive action from the board of the Barnsley in approaching the Yorkshire to seek a merger after the identification of possible losses of deposits with Icelandic banks," the two societies said in a joint statement.
In September, the UK's biggest building society, the Nationwide, agreed to stage a rescue takeover of two small societies, the Cheshire and the Derbyshire.
Protection
The Barnsley is the latest victim of the implosion of the Icelandic banking system, which has seen hundreds of thousands of UK savers losing access, for the time being, to their money held in accounts of the Icesave internet bank and other Icelandic banking operations.
The Yorkshire is the UK's third-largest building society with 136 branches and 1.9 million members.
The Barnsley has only 8 branches and 60,000 members and is the 34th largest society in the UK.
It said that while it had the reserves large enough to absorb the loss of its £10m deposits it had decided that being taken over by a larger society would be in the best "long term interests of its members".

Well presumably it will become the Yorkshire so can't see that we could continue with them on the shirts unless the new owners agree to their name being used and stump up anything owing. Anybody any idea what the shirt deal is worth?
Whats too good to be true usualy isn't true So our sponsor, my Building Society were risking my money in Icelandic banks, when many experts were saying they would not be able to sustain the kind of interest rate they were offering. So why should I take any notice of their Financial Adviser in future. Yorkshire Building Society on the front of our shirts dunt sound right somehow
A great Barnsley institution lost Helped out many miners during the strike. Lots would have lost their homes had it not been for Barnsley Building Society's policy to allow miners to default on mortgage payments until the strike was over. Sad loss.
depends BBC.......Staff in the branches, which will keep the Barnsley name, .
OR
Yorkshire Post....... The combined society will be called Yorkshire Building Society but the Barnsley's local identity and branch names will be retained

Maybe not But it won't be the same. We got a good deal on our mortgage because our lass works for the LEA. Barnsley Building Society looked after the town's people giving fair and very competitive mortgage deals and good interest rates to savers. The sponsorship of the football club was a good touch too.
they both say the same thing don't they? That all the branches that are currently Barnsley Building Society will keep their name and branding.
