I think it's safe to say we've definitely been in for Phillips which says a lot about PC's willingness to put up serious funds. He's also quoted as saying we're aiming for a top-half finish which, experience tells us, means he believes we can reach the play-offs. If we don't secure Phillips's services it won't be for want of having a go but you can bet there'll be plenty of "It was never going to happen" on this board.

    Windy, I'm one of the...

...'it'll never happen' brigade, but I don't think it will never happen because of the unwillingness of PC to dig into his pocket, I just don't think that the club will be able to convince Philips to come to Oakwell. I don't think the board lack ambition, far from it,I think we still have an image problem, which will make it difficult to attract that 'next tier' calibre of player. I hope I'm wrong.

    Agree

its not always down to money, quite often the players circumstances, the perception of the town, his family and other factors count against us. Phillips lives in Lichfield and with Birmingham interested, we're a much less appealing option.

    Lets not be daft

There's Leeds and Manchester within an hour, which are both far superior cities to Birmingham for shopping, culture, bars, clubs etc.

West Bromwich is hardly Kensington is it, if we're only looking at a five mile area around the ground

    Well....

A lot of our players tend to live in Leeds/Sheffield or other cities, Shipps lived in Leeds when he played for us and Muller lives there too. Where did Ashley Ward live now with the pot bellied pigs and that fine example of a wife? Majority of players commute to their clubs anyway l think thats how teams like Blackburn/Wigan attract players, these are sh*t hole towns but the majority of their players will live in Manchester.

Besides all that l can't see Phillips wanting to up root the family and change schools but for a player to commute from that type of distance is the norm for footballers, Darren Moore is commuting to Barnsley from Birmingham.

    Absolutely.

And don't forget there's a shop in Barnsley that stocks designers found nowhere else in the UK. People travel to Barnsley from Edinburgh and London to shop at Polyanna. Not saying she'd want to live here though but there are plenty of great places to live within commuting distance.

    RE: Absolutely.

Do people really travel to Barnsley from Edinburgh and London to shop at Polyanna?

The only place I've ever seen it mentioned is on here.

    They must come from somewhere

And I doubt it's the Kendray estate.

Fair enough, but it's just one shop isn't it. To be honest if I was offered a job in Barnsley I would live somewhere else and commute - and I don't have a champagne lifestyle.
