Anyone any ideawhen the new version of Windows will be released? Am looking at getting a laptop and would desperately like to avoid getting Vista on it. Before anyone says anything, i am going to get a iMac but only when i have income again. Need to know if it is worth hanging on until new Windows is out. </p>

You can get the Beta version now

What's wrong with Vista? Did you hear bad comments or just not like it?

Just didn't like it. Less accessible, less stable than XP. Don't really need beta version as i am looking to get laptop but thanks for the info.

Everyone who I know has tried it says it's no different from Vista

So either bite the bullet and go with Vista, look for an XP one but accept support will soon cease, or look at linux, see if that suits your needs.

Dell do laptops preinstalled with Ubuntu. If you fancy trying it out on your existing PC without reformatting, PM me. It's not everyone's cup of tea but you can't beat free for price and you could then buy a Windows disk later if you decide to.

It's not really a new operating system at all

It will be a big Service Pack (like XP SP2 was). Some fixes and a few enhancements - but essentially still Vista.

If you fundamentally didn't like Vista, I can't see this changing your mind.

Yeah, because if the emergence of Netbooks

XP was the only thing they would run, so rather than lose out on sales, Microsoft gave xp a reprieve.

    Indeed

But I doubt it will be for the long haul. Microsoft need to sell new operating systems to offset development costs.
I quite agree with LiverpoolRed that XP is the best ever Windows OS. I don't like Vista a great deal and moved to Linux at the end of 2007, when XP support was originally scheduled to end mid 2008. Never looked back.

I read somewhere that there will be a stripped down edition of Windows 7 that runs a max of 3 apps at once. I assume this is aimed at netbooks and ultraportable devices. Once they have got that base covered, they won't be able to kill XP fast enough,

Have you tried the Windows 7 beta?

Not sure I agree with you. Lot's of people who hated Vista will love Windows 7.

It seems a big improvement over vista as far as I can see especially as its running happily on my netbook with 512meg of ram. It's out performing XP and Vista consistently in lab tests, MS have killed loads of the annoyances that made Vista so unpopular. Their are lots more little time saving features have been added along with ways to work smarter wheter you use your PC for work or at home.

It IS better than XP and Vista but if you're someone who's stuck in their ways and don't want to learn some of the new tricks and UI enhancements that Windows 7 has to offer then you probably will find fault.

I hated Vista by the way.
