We havent had a New York thread for a while. I have tried searching but can't find anything, so the last one must have been on the old BBS. BA have some good deals on at the minute, and have seen some direct flights for £270 each. Am looking to go in March, and can get 10 nights at the Amsterdam Court hotel for another £850 through the BA website. So it works out at £700 quid each total for the 10 nights. I didnt think this was too bad. Has anybody stayed at the Amsterdam Court Hotel? Have checked out trip advisor, where it gets mixed reviews. Some are pretty harsh, but the biggest moan seems to be small rooms. Which doesnt really bother me. The location is central right next to times square. The only hotel I can remember mentioned from last time was Hotel Penn. But this seems to have even worse reviews on trip advisor. Any other recommendations for budget hotels? And does anybody know what the weather will be like in March? I presume it will still be quite cold. cheers.
Not a budget hotel but i stay in the Waldorf Astoria. an fantastic place which does actually offer value for money despite been a bit pricey!!. As for flight I would try UNTIED they have good deals on regularly
Take the reviews on Trip Advisor with a pinch of salt (unless it's the Manhattan Broadway in which case it really is that bad!) Trouble is that too many people will only post a review if they have a bad experience, so if a hotel gets mixed reviews it's probably ok to be honest. I think I've seen the Amsterdam Court - didn't look too good from outside but many don't. I stayed in the Pennsylvania and it was fine - book through their website and you'll get a renovated room, nothing spectacular but you ain't going to spend too long in your hotel room when you are in New York. I've got the Grand Union (or is it Central), booked which is a budget hotel but heard lots of good things about it for my trip in October. I just need to phone the airline to sort out the 2nd part of my trip though as I was going to New Orleans! As my return from NO was via Chicago I'll probably see about switching my NY-NO flight to Chicago instead, also the Bears are at home so I'll hopefully still get a NFL game in. Weather in March - pretty much what you'd get here really, could be warm, could be cold!
after doing some more reading, and talking to somebody at work, I am leaning towards the Penn, although the Grand Union does look ok for the price as well. If I go for the Penn and make the reservation on their website, is it worth requesting a refurbished room, or do you automatically get one for booking through them? thanks.
alreet fella We stayed in the millenium broadway over new year. Flights were a fortune that time of year and hotel even more for 5 nights. Hotel spot on and right in times square. Recommended! Try new york travel concierge for hotel. Thats who i booked through. Drop me a mail for owt else if u like. I got flights from Expedia as they were cheapest at the time. Look on opdo and cheapflights for a good starting point.
You should get a refurbished room through their website, basically the hotel make more money from direct bookings than through agents (as the 3rd party take their cut even if the room is cheaper) so the hotel are more likely to give the better rooms to people who have booked directly. I didn't ask last year when I booked but I got a refurbished room (they also send a email about a week before your trip to wish you a good journey - nice touch which gives you piece of mind that they have your reservation, I usually phone up to check a few days before). No harm in requesting a refurbished room though if theres a section on th booking form for special requests. I went for the Grand Union this time cause I'd heard decent reports and I just wanted to be in a slightly different location (for diners for breaky etc) just to try it out.
RE: alreet fella Cheers, it looks a good hotel, but a bit more than we wanted to pay. I reckon its gonna be the Penn. It will be fine, Im sure have stopped in worse
thing to remember with new york is 2 * = **** hole. Id go for a star above what you normally class as acceptable. 10 days is a long time in new york. We managed to see all the major sites in 5 and a half days. At least you wont have to cope with the quese we had! New year = chocka block man! Will have to post up some of the pics i took - especially times square NYE. That was a quality night apart from me being v. ill! Almost had to chuck mi rocks up in my hat! (puke) Not good. 8 hours stood in times square with stomach upset, headache, sickness and flu! Tried not to let it spoil the night though.
check this for flights dude - 2 for 1 http://www.aaliloandstitch2.com/index.html heathrow or gatwick though!
