Ian Appleyard
BARNSLEY target Michael Chopra could yet be staying at Newcastle United. The former England Under-21 striker is wanted by Andy Ritchie following Barnsley's promotion to the Championship. Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder has re-iterated his desire to keep the out-of-contract striker on Tyneside, but has not ruled out the possibility of sanctioning a loan move to Oakwell. "Michael has an offer and I just hope he can make his decision quickly so that all parties know where they stand," said Roeder. "I would be quite happy if Michael decided to stay. If he stays, maybe there will be an opportunity for him to go out on loan. We will have to see." Chopra scored 17 goals on loan at Barnsley two seasons ago and was a firm favourite with Barnsley supporters. His first-team opportunities at Newcastle have been limited, however, and the return to fitness of England's Michael Owen reduces his chances next season.
