It was -5 in Swindon this morning, with no snow. Have no idea how much colder it was at 3:22 when the hotel fire alarm went off...
That happened to us in Blackpool once in mid December.... The hotel was right on the front and my dad was stood outside in just a towel cos the alarm went off and he was having a bath!
There was no danger of anyone getting burned, but quite a few were starting to develop hypothermia...
If snow comes from the East the south east of England gets the worst weather in the UK. I lived in Croydon in 1962/3 and that winter was the worst I've ever experienced. I phoned My brother who was at Glasgow University at the time, and he told me there had been very little snow up there.
