optimism back on here after just 7 days, yes 7 days that is all it takes for things to change, one way or the other. Yet folk on here can predict that we were definitely going darn after only 17 games or 36 games and it may still happen but for fecks sake start to be a little more realistic when making these OTT statements. Cos yer mek yersens look daft when making them and even dafter when you start backpeddling. Last season taught you something but its obvious yer didn`t take it on board.
I've got to say I gave up on us staying up after the Bournemouth game. Results since have shown us that we've plenty of fight in us & that Bournemouth are a decent side. I'm back in the 'we can do it' camp
I've always said we'd stay up, until we lost against Bournemouth. I resigned myself to the drop after that and the fresh injury to Ramage. And despite two victories back to back, I still see us going down. But that won't stop me supporting the lads as ever, and hoping we pull off another magic trick and prove my own fears wrong.
It's still going to be difficult, Charlton are still in the driving seat as even if we do beat them, they'll still have two games in hand on us. If we lose that game... However, the last two victories have given us a chance and the manner of those victories have given us some optimism. Until the Leicester match I was confident we'd stay up. After it, I thought we'd probably go down. Not because we lost, or even the manner of the defeat, the better team won which often happens, but we're not competing against Leicester in our fight against relegation, we're competing against much poorer sides. I thought we'd be relegated as before the match we lost Jim O'Brien for the season and during it both Ramage and Cranie suffered hamstring injuries. Key players for us in key positions. We got our first look at a Nyatanga/M'Voto partnership in central defence and the signs weren't good. A 3-0 defeat at Watford confirmed our fears and the reports from the game were of an abject performance. The last minute goal conceded against Bournemouth seemed to put the cap on it. There was still hope, but we looked favourites for relegation. Acknowledging that isn't a problem for me. It's being realistic. Thinking we probably will be relegated isn't being unduly negative, it's analysing the situation and seeing it for what it is. Stating unequivocally that we will go down just doesn't sit right with me. Time after time we hear that all everyone wants is the players to fight, to battle. I don't know how they can do that if the supporters have given up all hope and don't believe in them. It's not the players that have given up, it's us. Don't know what will happen between now and the end of the season, I don't know if we'll do it, but we've got a chance and if we have a chance now then it stands to reason we must have had a chance two games ago. We're Barnsley for Christ sake, we nearly go down every year, if anyone can claw their way to safety it's us. We really should have learnt that by now.
Someone posted on the Charlon Forum that we stay up every year so they have to drag Birmingham into the mix -and if i was a Charlton fan I would have thought the same If I was a betting man I would not be putting money on us to stay up as I still think we have too much to do - but the last 2 wins have given me hope back and probably the players as well. I was sure we were going down after watching us at Watford when we had no fight and looked completely demoralised - after the last minute defeat against Bournemeouth ( I hadnt realised they had won 6 of their last 8) that just confirmed it and I went to Reading with a heavy heart and expected another tonking BUT football is a funny game - I've been watching long enough and been pleasantly and unpleasantly surprised at enough games over the years not to be too shocked we managed a result at Reading. I was surprised at our performance though and if we can play like we did in the last 2 games for the next 8 we will have given ourselves a decent chance of escaping - 4 more wins will probably do it so Brighton Leeds Charlton and QPR (we usually wait to the last game of the season) - but knowing us we will probably lose to Brighton and beat Burnley etc...
