"So far this summer we have tried to bring in exciting young talent alongside some experienced pros" https://www.barnsleyfc.co.uk/news/2024/august/02/georgie-gent-joins-the-reds/
Not sure what you mean tbh. Norwood, Cole.Cadden. Helik prime examples of experience. Since lee and Conway went I believe the new regime have taken that on board. But lots of clubs use the same methods of Data driven. I still prefer the old method mind to a degree. Scouting system.
Under the current data-driven recruiting method, we might never have signed Neil Redfearn and would never have signed King Ronnie. Says it all for me.
Why wouldn't the data driven system combined with some scouting have picked up Glavin scoring 35 goals in 101 starts for Celtic, especially as the season before he joined he scored a bucket full for them. Redfearn scored a few for Oldham too. Same system found lots of really excellent players in the past few years, some who weren't immediately rated by many fans, see Hourihane and Anderson. What is true is that there's no way we'd have held on to either of them for long these days.
Redders was 26 when he signed, so the filters in Excel may have allowed this. The King was 28 when he signed, so the program is likely to have excluded him. Allan Clarke (32) and Norman Hunter (35) would definitely have been out due to no resale value.
Yes and Leeds took £55,000 off us for his signature. A big fee in those days. Most clubs would have sent him on his way for free thanking him for great service and good luck in your new career. But not Leeds…..
You said you preferred a ' good old fashioned scouting system', my reply was he has been scouted as they've watched Gent up in Scotland.
Why wouldn't we? We've literally just signed Hourihane and Roberts. DKD is 26, same age as redfearn was when joining us and we are bidding for him. Absolutely nothing to suggest we wouldn't have signed Redders or King Ronnie
I think the issue isn't we've not signed experienced players but we've not signed them when we needed them the most, and ended up with a lack of it in the squad.
That’s the thing, we do stil often scout, the main difference is instead of people all over the country recommending people they have seen, we use the data first to identify potentials and then when needed go watch them.
