Right then... he was the big talking point in the team line-up today, let's face it, so how did he do? Well on the face of it, a clean sheet and a good penalty save looks pretty darn good. However, do not be fooled, it was his lucky day. Two out of our three moments of panic today both arose from his mistakes. In the first half he failed to collect that aimless through ball, and would have cost us a goal but for a brilliant challenge from Kay. The other one where he dropped a pretty straightforward cross resulted in a red card for Robbie and a penalty. Fair play to the lad though, 'made up' for it by saving the penalty - a plus point. He was also alert and did very well to save from Thorpe just after our opener. So, two mistakes, and two very good saves. Is that good enough? Well, not in my book. One save does not make up for a bad error. Today those errors didn't cost us points, but there is no doubt that they will do in forthcoming games, should he carry on making them. As it's the first game of the season, I can forgive and just about forget, but unless he cuts the bad mistakes down to more like 1 in 10 games rather than 2 in 1, bye bye Mr Colgan, hello Scotty.
Don't want to get into the Colgan v Flinders argument but one slight disagreement with your post - it wasn't an aimless through ball, it was a good ball which caught Kay and Tonge on the hop. Yup Colgan should have probably caught it cleanly but his defenders didn't do their job properly, although Kay did redeem himself with the block.
Fair enough but I don't think it can have been that a good a ball as it should easily have been the keeper's ball and he was under little if any pressure.
Thorpe had taken a position between Kay and Tonge who were caught out by the flight of tha ball and I suspect Colgan didn't expect them to get caught. Thorpe was then favourite to get to the ball first. Colgan had to come off his line quickly to smother the danger - doesn't excuse his 'slip' but some of the blame has to be shouldered by the defenders for putting him in that position in the first place.
RE: I am bemused by Colgans selection Andy said after the game he went for experience... if that's an explanation!
definetly the keepers fault the striker would have got to the ball but it was just the same as any ball over the top to shuker to run onto. the defenders had him covered, one was even goal side of him and colgan came out for some bizzare reason and dove at it but missed it by a mile. the striker put the quick ball in and because colgan was on the floor after getting in the way of the defender there was no keeper in the middle. for the penalty colgan dropped a bread and butter ball and robbie had little choice but to save it on the line. worst keeper at the club. he has to go now. 5 out of 10
I think we're probably going to agree to differ here Thorpe ran in between Kay and Tonge and was goal side of the defence, Colgan then came out to try and claim the ball. Kay was only goal side after Thorpe had picked up the spill from Colgan. The defenders were caught out and then Colgan spilled the ball.
RE: I am bemused by Colgans selection I wouldnt have chosen him over Flinders and yes he made a silly mistake which could have easily led to a goal to Swindon but he totally redeemed himself by making the penalty save, saving from Thorpe just after wed scored (when nobody else was alert to the quick free kick) and then not putting afoot wrong for the remainder of the game. Well done Nick Colgan!
I went along today, and was impressed by Colgan. Thought he did make a few mistakes, but did pull off some good saves also. Give him a few matches, then decide. I'm with Journo on this one
Load of balls! We scored straight after it anyway so if he hadn't spilled it, it probably wouldn't have got cleared and we wouldn't have scored! And if you ask me he spilled it because he was lookin a bit close to the edge of the area. We won the fecking game, we played the best we have done for a LONG time in my opinion, but still you have to pick on him to moan! He made at least 4 quality saves in that game but one save doesn't make up for a fault?/poo Oh of course not, one save, stopping them from scoring, doesn't make up for the fact that he made a fault and they DIDN'T score anyway! No that would be silly. If it was Flinders I bet you wouldn't have said a word! But that's OK, Scott's from Barnsley! Personally, I think they're both quality keepers, especially Flinders, they wouldn't get picked for internationals if not!!!
Nick Colgan. He dosn't inspire me with any confidence, but you can't drop him after keeping a clean sheet. He's good at saving penalties though!!
Protecting Flinders Has anyone forgotten just how young Scottie is? There is a sound argument which says that young players need to be developed sensibly over a period of time and not just flung in at the deep end, which could result in the pressure just becoming too much for them. If the idea is to continue to groom young Scottie into a Premiership quality keeper, then this may be proved right. It wouldn't do his confidence too much good if he got a reputation early season for dropping the clangers and got dropped for Colgan. I think Scott will get his chance soon enough and there maybe a sharing of games between the two. Having said all that - young Scott looks a great prospect. If the right way is to bring him on slowly, rather than rush him through as a bright star who were quickly to fade, then I would back Ricthie's decision. Let's hope that hindsight will prove him right.
I'm not 'moaning' for christs sake. I think I've been extremely fair and given him due praise for the good things he did. I was simply evaluating his performance, there is a difference. Oh and the fact he's from Barnsley is a completely irrelevant point. I don't base judgements on players on where they're from, what a ridiculous statement.
RE: Protecting Flinders I would like nothing more than Colgan to prove me wrong and be brilliant all season. I don't have anything personal against ANY of our players, I simply base my opinions on what I believe is for the good of the team I love. Good luck to the lad.
So he made 2 mistakes - but he also more than made up for it on my book - sorry but a goalie usually gets punished for mistakes and therefore they are more noticeable. How about Kay managing his first **** up of the season in less than 4 mins?!
The penalty was NOT the keepers fault As it shouldn't have even been a penalty. FFS! Clean sheet, penalty save, another outstanding save and yet people are on his back. Same goes for Wroe - played superbly but made one slip and and people were on his back. Other people made mistakes as well you know - Kay in the 4th min, Nardiello missed a sitter and also took a ***** penalty. Christ get behind them!
So tell me Who saved a penalty? What did Swindon do from free kicks? Err...**** all - and that's what we were discussing, that a keeper with more experience can set up a wall better than a younger keeper. Yes he'll make mistakes, as will any keeper.
Spot on If Flinders had made a mistake that led to a penalty but then subsequently saved it everyone would be praising him for putting the mistake behind him and redeeming himself. Seem sto me people choose their scapegoats before a match and then look for the points to back it up!
