What’s to stop him being put in as first choice? I’ve seen him play a few times, and generally he’s looked fairly solid. I know prior to that, he had few iffy moments, but they tend to get ironed out with a run of games. Surely if Davies needs a break to re-focus, it’s better with someone coming in who knows the defenders in front of him than a last minute loan deal from somewhere. Sometimes you just need game time - like Davies did when he came from Wednesday.....
I honestly can’t see Davies being dropped cause am sure Townsend would have been given a chance by now. Hasn’t he been here 2 or 3 seasons now ? Obviously Hecky doesn’t rate him highly enough to give him a run of games.
I honestly thought he’d be in when he returned from his short stint with Solihull Motors. Thought that was being used as a sharpener for him. I do rate him - like I say, When Davies arrived, he’d done nothing at Wednesday for years. We have 2 good keepers, but one needs a break and the other needs a chance.
Unfortunately my Nan is better than Nick and she’s been dead for 15 years. Shame we couldn’t get a keeper in though as you say Davies needs a rest.
Townsend had a nervy couple of cameo performances when he first arrived & people have judged him on that , which is totally unfair . I have watched him a number of times with the under 23"s & he has always played well , I just do not understand the assassination he gets on this board
Exactly. He’s played well for U23s and in the pre-season friendlies. Sometimes a keeper just needs a run of games - like Davies did when he first arrived.....
Agreed. He had a poor start but so did Davies, he was terrible n his first few games. Townsend looked ok in the friendlies and tbh he's a professional goalkeeper paid professional goalkeeper wages. We are desperate so he should be played. What's the worst he can do? Cost us a game? Well that will put him on par with Davies at times then
Don’t you think it’s telling that despite Davies being low on confidence and form that Hecky has not had the trust in Townsend to play him?
Possibly you are right , or he make think that he has confidence in him to play through a sticky patch & regain his form or dropping him might knock his confidence even more , only Hecky will know his reasons
Hecky clearly thinks Davies is the better of the two. His job is on the line based on these decisions.
Hecky shouldn't keep playing Davies if he keeps costing us. As someone alluded to above, what is the worst that Townsend could do, cost us a game which would put him on a par with Davies. A lot of people have this preconceived opinion of Townsend based only on a couple of nervy moments when he first joined us. You're right in that Hecky's job is on the line based on these decisions but I'd be tempted to give Townsend a game at QPR.
I think this is pretty much it - he’s allowing him to play through it to regain his confidence. Like you say, dropping him could only serve to make it worse. I rate Davies highly, and the past 2 seasons show what he’s capable of. I just think that If needs be, rather than bring someone in, just gives Townsend a stint instead.
I doubt there have been many instances where a keeper at a club has made as many errors as Davies has this season and continued to play. All keepers make errors from time to time, I understand that, but the guy has become a liability. If we have no faith whatsoever in Townsend (which looks to be the case) then it beggars belief that we haven't brought anyone else in. Hope we don't end up regretting it.
I've never heard Hecky express any real concern at Davies performances which may explain why Townsend hasn't been given a start.
