Williams out, Williams in! BARNSLEY boss Andy Ritchie will not move to replace defender Tom Williams, who is relaunching his career at Gillingham. Namesake Robbie Williams will step up to be first choice left-back following the 25-year-old's departure. "Robbie has come on brilliantly and played excellently in both friendlies so far," Ritchie said. "We've also got Brian Howard and there's Neil Austin who can play at left back." Tom Williams went for talks to Gillingham on Monday and has signed a two-year deal following his free transfer. "He was a little bit unsettled and keen to move back south, it is important to get the best from a player that he has a calm, settled home life," Ritchie added. Tom Williams, aged 25, was signed by former Barnsley boss Paul Hart last summer and had a year to run on his Oakwell contract. Barnsley have negotiated a sell-on clause in the agreement with Gillingham and will collect a cash bonus if the player moves again for a fee. He played 38 League matches last season but has been recently suffering an ankle injury. He had two spells at Peterborough before joining Barnsley and was bought for £350,000 by Birmingham City in March 2002. Barnsley will be sending a full first-team squad to Alfreton for their third friendly of the summer tomorrow night. Knee injury victim Bobby Hassell will not play but Matt Carbon is expected to have recovered from a foot problem. n Rotherham could face a Congo star when they play at Grimsby Town tomorrow. The Mariners' new signing Jean-Paul Kamudimba is expected to fly in from his home in Nice to join the Town squad. 21 July 2005
What worries me is.. did Ritchie really think that Robbie would NOT be first choice? Gordon Shepherd " To bring in, we'll have to move out"... Perhaps it won't be a direct replacement...
Where the manager playes him has nothing to do with it Ritchie played Austin at left back at Scarborough, but he's not a left back. In his interview with the official site Howard stated he was a central midfielder.
RE: Where the manager playes him has nothing to do with it So, after playing left midfield nearly all of his career, he states he'd prefer to play in the centre so that's his position? OK then, so what would you say Antony Kay's position is? Because he's played almost all positions, but goalkeeper for Barnsley.
No Direct Replacement for Williams. Andy Ritchie is hoping to sign a midfielder before the Leeds game , he feels that we need to plug gaps in the middle which in the past have cost Barnsley goals. The target is currently plying his trade in the Scottish Premier league.
RE: No Direct Replacement for Williams. Better not be a bloody Rangers player!! We've had enough of them...Carson, McClean, Paul Reid
RE: So basically you're saying Neil Austin the other night was a left back. He, normally, is a right back. Brian Howard has spent most of his career playing on the left hand side of midfield, he says he'd prefer to play in the centre, but he's been playing as a left midfielder, therefore he is a left midfielder! Players don't get to decide what position they play, the manager does.
RE: No Direct Replacement for Williams. He's an ex-Rangers player! He's a great guy though, I used to work with him at Northampton...it's just the Rangers connection I can't deal with!
Ah, you do know better He's not a central midfielder like he claims to be, he's a left midfielder like you say he is. I think you better tell him. Better tell him that Ritchie expects him to cover at left back too.
