Just to put things in perspective for those who aren't happy about the BBC not showing Barnsley's game live, I go back a few years and I believe I'm right in saying that the BBC have NEVER shown a Barnsley game live -- in the league or cup. It's true, they've shown extended highlights in midweek from time to time but only when it's a particularly big game, home to Man City in the League Cup, for example. Also, I may be wrong about this, but I think until Barnsley reached the Premier League, there were just two occasions when extended highlights of a league game appeared on MOTD. These were in the 70s, Walsall away and QPR away -- on each occasion this was due to severe winter weather which reduced the Saturday matches to just a handful of survivors. Not that the BBC are biased against Barnsley in any shape or form...
RE: ITV I don't remember but I know which game you mean. If you're right maybe we're not doing as badly as I thought... one every half a century. So when the next one is due to be shown it won't matter because football will have been banned for typifying Western decadence and causing offence or something.
Before Sky totally dominated We had a few games live on TV. I'm pretty sure that all of them were on ITV though so your point about the BBC still stands. I can only remember seeing us once on MOTD & that was when we played Portsmouth at home, circa January 1985. We weren't due to be on but they were left short of a fixture due to the weather so they upped sticks from wherever they were & showed our game instead. I'm sure there'll be other occasions when we've been on MOTD & others will now fill in the gaps in my memory.
RE: ITV That was for the Liverpool FA Cup game at Oakwell a few years back.</p> Greavsey's pre match analysis about Barnsley went something like:</p> "They havea Ron and Paul Futcher who may be twins</p> A Gwyn Thomas that may be Welsh</p> and a Winston Campbell that may have different coloured hair to anyone else."</p> FAO Maxwell Senior ; that's what he said. I'm just relaying the information.</p>
RE: Before Sky totally dominated Let's face it, the BBC see Barnsley as an embarrassment and they would barely have given it a mention if they'd gone under as a result of a certain Mr Doyle.
RE: ITV And an expert summariser not really knowing what day it was owing to an extra bottle of meths just before kick off.
You are right about the QPR match at Loftus Road. There were only about ten games played in total that day. And if memory serves (and this still winds me up years later) it was the same month as the Man City League Cup match. The whole December fixture list was decimated but Aylotts header still never made Goal of the Month.
Portsmouth (H) 2-2 in 1984 was another on MOTD If Turvey Tyke spots this thread, he will fill you in on any other matches.
