Anyone use a VPN? Is so what are the benefits as I've never used one (even with my kodi setup) and have never had an issue making me think I should

Just asking as got an email offer from stack social offering pay whatever you want price on a lifetime Vpn subscription so I'm tempted like

    Linky effort https://stacksocial.com/sales/pay-w..._StackSocial_DailyDeals_3023&utm_medium=email

I use HMA (Hide my Ass) VPN but that is because we live in Italy and BBC TV is 'geo locked'. Most people use VPN to get round that. However.... if you use internet banking it does add security because your IP address and location is hidden and your network internet traffic is also encrypted so hackers with 'sniffers' cannot intercept the IP packets and access data. It is also useful if you have Netflix since you can spoof a US or Canada Addresses and access the offerings instead of just being stuck with the country of registration like UK.

Otherwise there is not a lot of benefit in having it given the monthly cost. ALSO BBC -being t*ssers- instead of porting BBC stuff onto the European side of the latest Comms satellite, encrypting it and charging a sub for all those ex-pats etc to access BBC and iPlayer have instead spent money on a tech team who are blocking the various VPN servers in the UK that enable expats to watch BBC without a licence. Well I say "without a licence" but Italy, for example make you buy a TV licence even if you don't have a tv. If you have broadband they argue (rightly and unlike the BBC at the moment) that you could access programs via the internet so you have to pay up. Nevertheless, many p[eople in Spain, Italy , France, etc would be happy to pay a monthly sub a la Sky ( which BBC blocked their output from a few years ago) to get UK Freeview/FreeSat. they could actually make some money instead of spending it finding/blocking VPN servers.

Cheers Tekkytyke id be using it mainly for streaming content but if honest I've never needed to work around geo restricted content , just seems that everyone and their dogs lately insists on a VPN and it was/is a good deal.

Think I might give it a miss for now

I use VPN Unlimited. £12 uncapped for 3 years. I don't use it massively but it comes in handy from time to time. UK ISPs are getting blocked all the time though, so I reckon it will become more prevalent

It depends how bothered you are about people knowing you're wearing big knickers.

The only reason I'd use one is if I was abroad and wanted to watch UK tv and stuff like the BBC iPlayer etc. There's a free Google Chrome add-on called Hola which is reputed to do it but I've not tried it yet.

My sister (who lives in Spain) has a free (I think) VPN on her iPhone which she uses to watch UK tv.
