.... might be a daft question, sorry if it is, but how do you know the correct colour of your car when buying a can of spray paint? Can't find it anywhere on my car documents

Spray a little of the paint on and see if it matches.

find the chassis number and check it with a main dealer -they should have a record of the original colour

Should be on the V5 registration form. Thing is, that's the manufacturer's colour. I had a 'cobalt blue' Renault Laguna that needed a bit of spray after some pillock ran into the back of it. Closest colour match I found was British Racing Green.

    nope

the V5 tells you one of a limited selection of colours that the DVLA uses.

    Check the VIN plates

either inside door frame or under bonnet. it will give you the colour number code . use this number when you get paint

Stand corrected. Thought it was on there. Is it MOT forms then? I know I got mine from some official documentation.

    places you could look.....

    1. there might be a chassis number plate in the engine bay somewhere. that might have the paint code stamped on it
    2. some cars have a sticker on the door/door frame which states some of the stuff you need to know about the vehicle
    3. might be a form from the manufacturer?

failing that, just take it into a dealer and they might be able to help

Like Gaz says together with make, model & year there should

be a guide in the shop which you can use to get the correct paint, including primer etc.

    RE: Vin Plate

Check Vin Plate under Bonnet. Will say colour code on it. Get code then goto any motorist shop & they will have a chart where u can match it up.
