    ... when a tonne of co2 is mentioned in respect of emission from aeroplane etc.. is that a tonne in weight and if sohow do they measure it ?</p>

    Well Mass not Weight. Im sure there are lots of ways but Mass = Density * Volume.

    So if you know the density of a gas and you know how much of it you have you can calculate the Mass. I assume they can measure the volume of C02 that a plane displaces per hour somehow.

    so it's not weight then... just that on a tv programme it reported a family of four would produce a tonne of co2 on a flight. it there were 200 passengers then that would be 50 tonnes which it probably heavier than the inital fuel.
