...(think you will have to be quite old to remember this)..My wife (Barnsley born and bred) and I are debating where the Gas Nook was. I only remember Barnsley vaguely around 1967 as I had just moved here as a young 'un and was still finding my way around. It was around then that a lot of Barnsley centre was being cleared to make way for new development.

I have a feeling it was up near the level crossing towards Langdale Road but she thinks it was much nearer to the Centre and May Day Green.

As an aside and looking at old photos of Barnsley as we are doing, it looks like successive councils have FUBB by demolishing some fantastic old buildings and ruined what was a brilliant market town centre in the name of 'modernisation'. Something they are about to repeat!

Basically because I have lived in the town all my life until last year, that makes 48 years and I was a regular visitor to Barnsley town centre with my mum in the 60`s and we used to go to the market every weekend, I resented it at the time , being dragged around the market every Saturedy was not my idea of fun.
There is some photos in the Library that show the market areas and the town centre, there used to be some on the wall in what was Oldfields cafe upstairs in the market.

Gas Nook was near the Market Inn quite close to Mayday Green.

You can buy "Old" maps from some local shops and newsagents. They are published by Alan Godfrey and are based on OS maps of c1900.

They are well worth having if you are into your family or local history and need to know where "lost" streets use to be. Not too costly either.

There are old maps in the library in't tarn and Wombwell Library has a selection of local maps c1930.

Actually I was trying to elicit the location from you rather than just a confirmation that she was right. I was not, in any way trying to say you were wrong or did not know what you were on about. Cheers anyway matey.

Walk down New Street-side of the Alhambra Centre. At the corner was Albert Hirst -butchers. Facing was the start of Pontefract Road.30 yards down turn left into the GAS NOOK. Hard to visualise now but thats it.
