The courts have just upheld the plain packaging ruling re tobacco products in spite of BAT 'et al' spending millions on expensive barristers etc. Putting aside personal views, personal freedoms rights and wrong of smoking, and as an ex-heavy smoker (gave up a long time ago when my daughter was born having once been on 30-40 a day) I have to laugh at this guys 'argument'..... 'Simon Clark, director of smokers' group Forest, said the judgment was "very disappointing". He added: "Plain packaging treats adults like children and teenagers like idiots. "If you don't smoke but enjoy alcohol, sugary drinks and convenience food you should be concerned by this judgment because the health police are coming for you too."' I don't remember ever suffering from 'passive' "sugary drink, fast food, alcohol convenience food" intake. I DO however these days have an allergic reaction to exposure to cigarette smoke where I start to wheeze and have difficulty breathing (strange given how heavily I used to smoke - albeit nearly 30 years ago.) As an aside, I wonder how TTIP would have affected the outcome whereby corporations can sue governments for legislation that impacts upon share values and company profits. Without it , all they have been able to do is take action against their trademarks and corporate identity being banned.
I share your concern about TTIP. Basically it allows global (mostly US) companies to completely override national laws, in particular those relating to health as in this case.
TTIP- should be the first thing we should concentrate on fighting if we vote to remain. The French have already said their NHS must be exempt from it. Also, if we Brexit what's to stop the UK from entering a TTIP or similar agreement anyway? Fight it from within I say.
