"Local Government Association says rogue landlords providing sub-standard accommodation should be jailed." (BEEB) We moved to Barnsley in 1967 when my dad left the Inland Revenue Valuation office in Lytham to take up a post for Barnsley MBC as the 'Rent Officer' . The Rent Act ensured private landlord' s rents were 'fixed' according to the valuation set for the property and were, indeed, fair and non-exploitative. My dad had already retired by the time Thatcher came along and her Government repealed the Act paving the way for 'slum landlords' . The system worked but we know what happens in a completely free, unfettered and unregulated market when greed and unscrupulous people take over. Same with care homes where profit before people is king. Private, morally sound well run businesses struggle when trying to compete against those businesses. Capitalism works but only with 'checks and balances' in the form of some regulation by central or local Government (with some 'teeth') Rant over!
