Wife tried yesterday tickets came up at £16 from Fev to Saltaire, no sign of 50p tickets or £1 and £2.
Just did a quick search out of interest, and its quoting me a minimum of £17.70 for two adults return to Leeds from Wombwell and £42 Meadowhall to Manchester. That doesn't seem cheap to me...
I went on and it's still full whack for me to buy Pontefract Monkhill or Wakefield Westgate to Rotherham returns. I think the discount is on selected journeys only.
A few years ago it was great, tickets were genuinely 50p but you had to go on certain routes, Meadowhall to Scarborough via Hull or Sheffield to Manchester via Edale, but they seem to have knocked the mega-cheap tickets on the head.
I think the trick may be to break the journey down - I've just got a day trip to Blackpool and back for £6 by doing Barnsley - Leeds for a £1, Leeds - Blackpool £2, Blackpool - Leeds £2 and Leeds - Barnsley £1. (Obviously that's theoretical until the trains actually show up!)
Have to also bear in mind Northern don't do all the routes in the country so look at what they do cover first then see if that works. It is only for Northern operated routes. I just put Hudds to Kings X in there and they clearly don't do that route but was 70 quid one way.
