My anti-virus software is due to expire in a couple of days. Does this mean immediately it expires I'm effectively without protection against viruses? Or, more likely I suppose, it doesn't get updated as and when? And if I uninstall it and download a free AV will I still get the same level of protection? All this worry for the sake of £20-00, eh? :(

I'd recommend renewing it from expiriance you get what you pay for with anti-virus.
Once it expires it stops you from doin updates. You can still do scans but you wont be proected from the latest threats.

Thanks, mate. Do I uninstall old and install new purchased version or can I just renew it online? And can I renew the whole AV/Firewall package online too?

You can renew online but you keep your current version it'll work just as well but new one has a different interface.
