Firstly, I thought it was a cracking game and one which anyone who had paid on the day would have probably felt that they were getting good value for their money with. I thought the tactics, in the first half at least, were spot on. Ritchies clearly felt that their Defence was slow and the ball over the top undid them time after time. Good goal from Nardiello and excellent bit of work from Richards to earn the penalty. He could very easily have snatched at that chance but just held his nerve long enough to draw the foul, almost as pleasing to see intelligent play like that as it was to see him convert the penalty. Things that disapointed me: 1) Nardiello and the offside decisions. He had a good game but how many otherwise good attacked were snuffed out with him being caught. I am sure that he was busting with enthusiasm to try and stake a place in the team but just look along the line before you set off - it's not rocket science, particularly when you do have the pace to go past people. 2) Devany - Is he still carrying that knee injury? - The miss aside I thought that Devany seemed to be lacking a little pace, certainly not up to what he can produce. 3) Shukes - Poor lad, when is he going to clear the first man with a cross. Credit to him though, anyone else that had made so many howling attempts at crosses may well have hidden, at least he wasn't afraid to stay in there and keep plugging away. My biggest moan of the game was not switching tactics when they went down to 10 men. The Defenders dropped deeper, didn't give as much emphasis on the offside trap and as a result the ball over the top ceased to be an effective weapon for us ... but we still persisted with it. A little bit more thought from the players and management for that matter, and I'm sure that we'd have got the goal we needed. I just felt that we needed to keep possesion of the ball a little more, draw them out and stretch, get it onto the wings and make it difficult for them. Someone behind me commented that they played better with 10 men than they did with 11. I don't think that was so much the case as it was us playing wrongly against those 10 men. Anyway, we're still in there with a shout ... starting to get exciting again this football malarky eh!
yep i agree however, nads plays on the shoulder and he scored one and gave devaney an open goal for another - can't complain too much about that. its something that he can eradicate from his game hopefully and that has got to be something addressed by ritchie etc in coaching as it gives the opposition the initiative again when he's caught out. thought he was fantastic apart from that and back to the type of player i thought he could have been after seeing him against blackpool under gudjon. with the right guidance he could be such a good player for us. richards once again was quality and those two up front together worked well. however, that would means hayes being left out. nice headache to have i suppose. its all to play for and i certainly wouldn't fear swansea in the playoffs, although i would put 2 men on trundle. their little midfielder (no.7 i think?) was good as well. aprt from that they were ordinary at best. rory was just as i expected - **** poor. i think we are going to need a bit of luck if we are going up automatically and i just can't see it - although a win against brentford and it might just be possible. so its looking like the playoffs, in which case we will have had a great season whatever happens.
