The DWP who are in the Public a Commercial Services Union (PCS). Many of our members are the lowest paid in the Civil Service, bordering along the minimum wage. By the way I hate the Tories with a passion (ex Miner and all)Thats the trouble now with our Politics, everyting thing is too far to the Right. There's no real alternative. Power to the People

Is there still coal down there? I ask because I was reading an article today about the possible rebirth of the coal industry, now the cost of energy has made coal extraction economically viable again. A new breed of machines, specialising in extracting the scraps from the seams have been developed so there must be some truth in this.
RE: Is there still coal down there? I don't know? Didn't BUdge continue with mineworks around the Selby area etc when it was deemed there wasn't any coal?
RE: Is there still coal down there? I believe Grimethorpe had loads of coal left. A lot was considered uneconomical to mine because coal could be imported cheaper from subsidised foreign industries....no surprise really that once we aren't producing the cost of those imports goes up. My dad always use to say that Grimey produced some of the best quality coal (in terms of the burning temperature it could achieve)
British Deep-mined Coal was economically viable...Indeed In the 1980s/90s we produced the cheapest deep-mined coal in Europe. An outstanding achievment bearing in mind the Tories heavilly subsidised Gas and the Australian Govt. subsidised the Transportation of their coal into Europe. Please don't believe that Coal production was halted because of its price. Also please bear in mind that here in Britain we were at the forefront of cleaner burning coal technology before the Tory Govt. pulled the plug on the funding for this. Trust me I know.
Don't know about being sold to Scandinavia.. but it went there directly as a result of the funding being stopped by the Govt.
