I'll be surprised if Flicker picks McNulty this weekend, whilst he wasn't directly at fault for any of the 5 goals at Bristol, it won't have gone unnoticed that his prescence in the team didn't have any positive impact (I'm trying to be kind to him there!). Got to get Kennedy back in the middle 3, regardless of who he plays at LWB, IMHO
Wing backs would be suicidal, flat back 4 for me. With a holder. Bed this is in ready for City. Hassell-Foster-Cranie- Kennedy _________Delap____________
Trouble is against Wolves we didn't have any width when we played with 4 at the back, certainly first half. Unless you counted O'Grady man marking their full back. Our full backs were exposed, and the attack and midfield were totally disjointed. We looked better when O'Grady dropped in to a more orthodox right midfield position in a 4-4-2 second half. I didn't go on Saturday so can't say what the problem was with the previously successful 3 at the back. I'm sure someone will say McNulty and maybe that is true, but from the highlights the back 3 looked horribly exposed all game. I think in the last two games we've got carried away. Against both teams we've been far too gung ho and stopped doing the basics, reverting either to lumping it forward and thinking a goal would come (Wolves 1st half) or thinking that we don't need the wing backs to defend or a midfielder to sit (Bristol City). If we go back to basics, keep our shape, and do the simple things right we'll be right.
Unless someone is brought in I would guess Kennedy will be played wide left, be it either as a full back or wing back. If we're to go with three at the back, I'd prefer Hassell to play the sweeper role between Foster & Cranie. On the positive side, Etuhu should be pushing for a recall and Dawson could possibly be back before the international break. Another positive is our last four goals have all been scored by substitutes. We've lost one game and won eight out of the last ten. I'm prepared to avoid panicking & reaching for the suicide pills just yet.
They will have Chris Eagles down their right, which is a disaster waiting to happen, unless we have someone with guile and pace in our left defence. I would not be surprised if it is a back four set-up with Wiseman, Foster, Cranie and Kennedy. If it were five across the back, we need a left wing-back, unless you move Perkins there.
I dunno, wing backs are okay if you have them, we don't. Golbourne and Stones were suited and were effective, the other options are fish out of water, no pace. Defending is all about caution and I'm erring flat back 4 with Delap holding and dropping back as required. Cyska looked bright on the left when he came on v Bristol and has never been shy of a tackle. Mainly thinking about this for City, but a dry run in the league won't hurt. I really don't want to single anyone out, but the thought of McNulty facing City is putting me off even trying to get a ticket.
