Why do people need to do stupid things to raise money for charity?
If I want to give £100 to cancer research what difference does it actually make if somebody grows a beard or shaves their hair? It's a sad state of affairs when people are only willing to donate to worthwhile causes if they get to embarrass or humiliate somebody in the process

 

I don't need to pour a bucket of ice over my head to donate to Barnsley Hospice every month, nor do I need the attention.

Social media, it has its downfalls.

Whilst I agree, It ultimately helps, gets publicity and the charity earns more from it.

It could also be argued that maybe we shouldn't give charitable donations to charity's such as cancer research - shouldn't we all give through tax?

 

The counter argument to that is that (a) most charities don't get direct government funding and (b) by directly donating you get to give to causes that mean most to you.

 

November, is that an annual subscription type thing then ??

It's about raising awareness and it's a very effective way of doing so.

I'd never heard of ALS before the Ice Bucket challenge despite charities raising money for the condition for years. As a result I was able to make a contribution to the charity.

My only problem with it is the way that people are guilt tripped into donating. I have a subscription set up to donate monthly to a charity and I have donated over 500 hours of my time to a second charity since the beginning of March. However, there are a couple of people who I know that seem to sign up to do every charitable thing going (by that I mean running, skydiving, walking at midnight etc. not directly doing work for the charity) and then pester everyone for donations. It got the point where every month they were doing something or other and then you look tight if you don't donate at least a fiver. I also feel as though most of the things they are doing are incredibly selfish, such as one of them who kept reminding everyone at work each day that she couldn't do the skydiving if she didn't raise at least £500 as it cost that much to do it. I'm sorry but shouldn't she fund that herself? It sounded to me like she was raising £500 to pay for her to go skydiving. Don't even get me started on people who want me to donate to them for not drinking - why don't they just donate the money they would have spent on alcohol to that? Maybe they do, but they never seem to mention that bit. They even have a thing where you can donate extra to allow them a 'one drink pass' or something - what the actual....?

Well said. I think it's the guilt tripping that annoys me too. That and like you said, people ho are doing something they want to do and using charity as a reason to fund it.

A group of keen golfers going abroad to play golf at every pro course in America for example is one I remember. All funded of course by charity sponsorship.

I'll be raising awareness for those that aren't aware of the need to raise awareness or whose awareness of being aware of awareness has lapsed due to being unaware. It'll cost me thousands to do so. Please donate and be AWARE!

I pretty much agree JD we have a couple of regular monthly donations and chip in for other stuff but I don't like it when folk give you the evil eye if you choose not to. There are regularly people stood inside the doorways of supermarkets with buckets that give you ' the look' if you don't give. As I say we do but I strongly feel that it should be my decision not somebody trying to guilt me into it.

If I'd have asked folk to donate money to charities of my choosing, they'd have said no. But because I walked 28 miles to Chesterfield/Bradford, we raised thousands.

Had we released that Wembley song and asked folk to buy it, I doubt it would have sold out within the first day had we not said it was going to charity...

At least you did unselfish things though. I presume the walk was quite difficult and painful and you gave people something in return for the CD. I donated very happily to both those causes, the skydiving one I mentioned above... I did not.

Whitey's next adventure is to walk to the airport, skydive from the 747 whilst listening to Will I Nivver on repeat for people who are addicted to forums. I have donated a mars bar and a WSB sticker (Used).

Piece of piss. We all got taxis. Just got out every few miles to take staged walking photos. Spent four hours in a pub. We didn't tell Mansford though. He walked the whole way.
