What on earth is happening? BARNSLEY boss Andy Ritchie has revealed he may take his time in signing a new keeper and could line up on Saturday without an experienced custodian on the bench. Speaking following last night's match, Andy said: "It is something we are working on but we may have to take out time to ensure we get the right player in. There is no point rushing and signing the wrong keeper. "Look at Sheffield United last season - they went through virtually all the campaign without a keeper on the bench. We have people in mind and something could still happen before Saturday but we will be cautious and make sure we bring in the right player. "We are going to offer a deal to Kyle (Letheren) and that will free us up a little. We could go without a keeper on the bench on Saturday and not having an experienced back up will not be the end of the world. We can always draft someone in on loan in an emergency and there are players out there available to us in that situation. "A move for Ola Tidman is still not completely out of the question but there are one or two other keepers we are keeping tabs on. We have some people in mind at the moment but have to make sure we get the right one". MAIN MATCH SPONSORSHIP AT OAKWELL
No offence, AR, but... "Look at Sheffield United last season - they went through virtually all the campaign without a keeper on the bench." They also had Phil Jagielka playing in most matches, who is also a competent 'keeper. Who do we have in that sense?
Just As.... you hear good news in Healy signing and think great we only have a striker to think about now we have two goalkeepers coming in on thursday. This happens and it's like one step foward and two steps back.
RE: No offence, AR, but... I agree with Ritchie. Stick Letheren on the bench and if there is a rare occasion where he may be required due to injury / sending off, he'll be fine. If Colgan is out for a long period we can loan an experienced keeper as we have in the past. It alway amazes me when countries take 3 keepers to a world cup. There is no need for it - I can't recall a time when the first 2 keepers were injured / suspended at the same time.
I'd like to see Tommy Wright in goal If he stands in it for 90 minutes he might learn where the fecking thing is. And then we'll have a player on our hands.
Agreed On what I've seen of Letheren, offering him a deal shows more faith in Lukic's coaching ability than in the lad himself. Perhaps after his success in bringing Flinders on, we think a cheap young keeper is a low risk investment. End of the day, as you say, we only need a sub to see out the remainder of 90 minutes in the event of injury or red card. If this happens and suspension or severity of injury put him out for a few games, then we can look in the loan market.
as for the world cup The squad sixe used to be 22. Fifa increased it to 23 but it is actually a FIFA rule that 3 of them have to be registered has Goalkeepers. i.e those 3 cant be named as a outfield player, this is not stop abuse of the increase and name a strikers as you third "goalkeeper" So only taking 2 wouldn't make any difference at all. Maybe taking Defoe or Bent not Walcott may have
It is'nt the fact that putting on hold the aquasition of another keeper what confuses me is the continuation of mixed messages which have, for sometime, been comming out of oakwell. Rather than have retracted efforts, false promises or contradictory dialogue why the fook can't richie keep his mouth shut until it has actually happend.
Well, maybe he has been told by Gordon Shepherd that he can either use the money to sign Healy or to fund a goalkeeper. It's all down to money

Ritchie didn't say we are NOT going for a keeper. Andy said: "It is something we are working on but we may have to take out time to ensure we get the right player in. There is no point rushing and signing the wrong keeper.
