The Chancellor god bless him proposes that nurses accept a 2% pay rise in 2006. This is inline with his innacurate estimate of inflation.

Ok I hear you private company employees say we never get that. Well let me tell you something - Agenda for Change, the streamlining and pay parity reorganisation of NHS pay that supposed to be implemented in Oct 2004 STILL HASNT TAKEN PLACE in most hospitals, meaning nurses havent had a payrise since April 2004. So the promise 10% over 3 years hasnt happened and Gordon Brown is already sliding back on that government promise.

Where Agenda for Change has been implemented many senior clinical nurses have actually been downgraded to a lower pay band as nursing experience and clinical care are not valued by the criteria used whereas management skills away from the patients are rewarded.

If you want to do something direct send the chancellor a post card at www.rcn.org.uk/pay2006

    Many thanks

  2. Hi Tina - my wife Glennys is a Sister in the operating theatres at Gloucester Royal and they HAVE had their Agenda for Change rises, quite recently. Trouble is though she and her colleagues have all been completely underwhelmed by this. The so-called generous pay rises have not materialised and, believe it or not, one or two have actually lost out by being re-graded. Seems the overall problem is that the individual health trusts just can't afford it. So much for governments bleating on about their support for nurses - hollow words, every one. This government is no better than its predecessors on that score.

    yep... clinical nurse specialists

in our Trust have all been given the same pay band meaning many have taken a pay cut of over £3k pa. These are people who have many years irreplacable experience, who ofter have masters or PhD qualifications undertaken in much of their own time and funded in the main by themselves.

To top it all of course the government are trying to erode our pension rights, so the barstewards wonder why we all bugger off to work elsewhere for better pay and conditions.

You know my opinion on nurses

The best people walking on God's green earth .(Y) If you quadrupled their salaries , they'd STILL be underpaid !

It is a joke I work in the NHS and this agenda for change is pants, we are not looking like getting anywhere near the amount of money orginally mentioned.

But Joe Public believes the govt propaganda

and now seem to think we're all overpaid and going to live in the lap of luxury on our pensions.

I wish, most nurses die within a year of retirement cos we've been worked to the bone.

Agenda for Change does reward long service by giving extra leave entitlements - can we take it... no there is no cover so we end up working our leave and losing a portion of it.

  8. Precisely! Govt propaganda.......

....all lies and false promises. As you say, nurses are worked to death. My wife might go in at 7.30 with a finish time of 6pm. During that time she MIGHT get 20 mins for lunch, if lucky, and maybe a drink on the run. Some days she can't even get that and, remember, this is a SISTER grade. Management?? Hah! She comes home exhausted mentally and physically from most shifts and has been doing this for 30 years. Is she rewarded for this dedication? (you know the answer to that one!) There is no question of strike action, and there never will be. People need their operations, be they emergency or planned ones. It's a fact of life but, for God's sake, when are the professsionals involved in this going to be paid PROPERLY????

It's probably no comfort to your wife and Alison

But their work and caring attitude ARE appreciated . When we've had our darkest days with Laura , it was ALWAYS the nurses who went out of their way to ease our pain and suffering . It wasn't the doctors , it wasn't the managers , it was the nurses . I could never do justice in words the debt my wife and I owe to that wonderful profession . Even now with my mother in hospital for over two weeks , after suffering a heart attack , the nurses who greeted us last night were cheerful and caring .
It makes my blood boil when these angels have their integrity and caring attitude exploited and taken for granted by faceless management and two faced politicians .:(( :((

  10. You won't hear any argument from me with ANY of that! n/t

Unfortunately, while ever good will continues you won't get a pay rise. A bit of working to rule is the only answer but because you are in a caring profession not enough of you will go for it.

    You have my support(Y)

  13. RE: My god

You can always rely on some really intelligent responses from some people on here! So, when you're lying in your post-op bed, in pain, missing a few vital bits, you won't be doing any whinging yourself then? No, thought not

    RE: My god

I think anyone who starts work at 8.30pm and then works over night until 7.45am the next morning for 7 nights in a row is entitled to a moan. My wife does this and she is lucky if she gets time for a cup of tea never mind taking her break. It takes a good 2 days for her to recover from her shifts.

Nurses are treated like dirt and taken for granted.

Nurses have my support, but interestingly they also have the support of Middle England, except when it comes to paying for them.

thank you for your time and interest

Course no miners got treatment in A&E did they?

I expect they did sweetie - cos nurses have never yet withdrawn their labour. If they had come on in sympathy with the miners the injured miners would have been left.

Isn't this all tied up with the Governments long term plan to privatise large swathes of the public sector. I know that John McConnell MP is organising a mass loby of Parliament later this year to highlight the issue.

Many Labour MPs with small majorities are sweating because they know that they might have to find a proper job in a few years.
