Absolutely gobsmacking. He joined the Tory part at the age of 17.

It's a shame he's not still speaker now.

I can understand him being disillusioned with the Tory party under Boris, but given he has spent so long as a Tory once Boris is gone would he not want to back to being a Tory?

He's a good speaker, and I respect him for his handling of many a situation, but he's a proper Tory. Where is this (Labour) party going? Surely he needed to stop in his party and try to vote against Johnson.

To add to that, I could actually see him as having the strength, wisdom and courage to stand against Johnson as leader of Labour were the opportunity to rise. And I am quite sure that the leader of the opposition job will soon be available.

I do not debate politics but I find this man one of the most nauseating pricks ever , I cannot stand the man & if he ever featured on a tv item then I would switch over & remember to all of you are having orgasm"s about this piece of news , if this man is changing colours it will not be for the good of the people it will be for his own ends , never trust a politician & especially a politician who changes sides , beware !!!!

Had he stayed in the Tory party, BJ could have just ignored him since he would be just another back bencher, he's now raised his profile significantly and demonstrated that if somebody with his background can switch to Labour, then there really is something wrong with the Tories.

Not surprising really. His wife, Sally, stood as a Labour candidate for election to Westminster City Council and has made no secret of her ambition to be elected as a Labour MP.

He technically stopped being a Tory in 2009 when he became speaker.

Don’t like him but I thought he did his job well tbf (look how weak Hoyle is in the chair), but him becoming a Labour member just highlights the road they’ve gone down and exactly why my card will have been recycled and is now probably bog roll or summat!!

It might have been gobsmacking more than a decade ago, when it was widely known that he and the Tories didn't go well with each other.

Given that it hasn't suited his interests over the past years to do anything other than as he has done, it suits him now so that he can stay in the limelight.

He speaks brilliantly but he is truly horrible.

He was once secretary of the immigration and repatriation committee of some right wing group called the "Monday Club". Policies included voluntary relocation of blacks and Asians and the scrapping of the Race Relations Act 1976, which prohibits discrimination on the grounds of “colour, race, nationality or ethnic or national origins”.

Wonderful chap he was. Course he's fine now too.

Should make him leader. He offered more opposition in one day than Starmer has in a year.

Absolutely as he will get public support now like "no wonder Bercow was so biased against the Tory party as speaker".

Fekin big lol at this, just because he wouldn’t let them ride roughshod at Parliament. I don’t like the guy but he did a good job.
