    Hi guys,

Wonder if anyone's got more DIY experience than me (you almost certainly all have!). Six months ago I moved into my current flat which was completely unfurnished - I needed to buy all my white goods myself. This included a washing machine, which I bought second hand. The problem I've been having for a long time now is that when it starts its spin cycle it sounds like all hell is breaking loose in my kitchen - items being shaken off shelves, an unholy and quite frightening racket, and the general feeling that it's about to bring the roof down on top of me at any moment. I dread to think what it's like for my neighbours.

It's not been too bad so far, as I've been able to wash clothes without spinning them (absolutely no problems there) and use the unseasonably warm weather to dry them outside. But now I'm thinking that I need to sort it out before the sun goes back to sleep for the winter.

The flat is the first floor of a converted house, and I suspect the problem might be that the place where the washing machine goes has an uneven floor and vinyl flooring. I've tried tilting the machine to adjust the height of the corners, but it's so uneven that the threads on the feet aren't long enough, and it still tilts quite far forward with the back ones at their minimum and one of the front ones at its maximum (I can't rock it, but I know that it isn't even due to the trusty spiritlevel I borrowed from a friend). I've read that some kind of support mechanism underneath it to give it an even platform to sit on would work, but I'd probably need to get somebody in to do this and I can't go too mad with the floor itself because it's a rented flat. I don't even want to consider doing this until I know for sure that it's a balance problem, though, as if it's likely that the machine itself is broken then it wouldn't be money well spent.

That was quite a long explanation! In short, my question is simply this: given that the washing machine sits on an uneven floor, is that the most likely reason for it turning into Satan's Own Appliance every time the spin cycle starts? Or do I need a new machine? And if that is the reason, could I do something relatively cheap and non-intrusive to balance the little fella out?

    Hi

Has it done it since you bought it? if so did you remove the transit bolts at the back before you installed it?
